Insomnia is a common issue among modern youth, whether caused by excessive work pressure or irregular schedules. It is profoundly distressing for anyone, as a fatigued body deprived of proper rest poses significant health risks. Therefore, alleviating insomnia is crucial. Quality sleep greatly benefits physical health, while poor sleep quality manifests in symptoms such as difficulty falling asleep, frequent dreaming during sleep, easy awakening, and persistent sleep difficulties. Many have experienced waking up in the middle of the night and being unable to fall back asleep—this too is a form of insomnia. In short, any condition that hinders proper rest can be classified as poor sleep quality.
1. Anmian Point (Sleep-Inducing Point)
As its name suggests, this acupoint calms the mind and soothes the spirit, effectively alleviating and regulating insomnia symptoms. Additionally, it helps pacify liver wind and extinguish wind, making it beneficial for treating tinnitus, headaches, forgetfulness, irritability, and palpitations.
The Sleep-Inducing Point is located behind the earlobe. Place three fingers together behind the earlobe—roughly where the middle finger rests—and press until you feel a dull ache. This is the Sleep-Inducing Point. Massaging this point for three to five minutes daily or applying moxibustion for about ten minutes can significantly alleviate insomnia.
2. Baihui Point
Baihui is one of the body's major acupoints, located at the exact center of the crown. To locate it, draw two lines: one through the center of the crown and another connecting the tips of both ears. The intersection of these lines is Baihui. This point regulates the body's yin and yang energies, effectively treating insomnia, headaches, dizziness, and hypertension. It also addresses conditions like rectal prolapse and shock. Daily massage not only eases sleep disturbances but also connects acupoints throughout the body to promote overall wellness.
3. Shenmen Point
Located on the hand, raise your palm facing toward you. Find the junction between the palm and wrist on the little finger side. The point where you feel a dull ache upon pressure is Shenmen. The Shenmen acupoint offers numerous therapeutic benefits. It alleviates insomnia, forgetfulness, palpitations, and other mental disorders. It also effectively relieves chest pain, restlessness, dementia, motion sickness, and conditions like hypertension and chest/rib pain. For those suffering from insomnia, daily massage of this point for several minutes can promote sleep.
4. Sanyinjiao (SP6) Acupoint
Sanyinjiao is arguably the most commonly encountered acupoint in daily life. Its therapeutic scope is exceptionally broad, including effective relief for insomnia.Located approximately three cun (about 7.5 cm) above the inner ankle bone, stimulating this point through massage, acupressure, or moxibustion can treat insomnia and palpitations. It also regulates menstruation, addresses gynecological issues, and effectively treats gastrointestinal disorders. As a highly versatile point, regular massage or moxibustion is recommended.
The above four acupoints are all effective for alleviating insomnia. Rubbing them for a few minutes each night before bed, with consistent long-term practice, can help improve sleep quality. Those experiencing insomnia may find it beneficial to give these techniques a try.
