Dystocia broadly refers to situations during labor where complications arise—such as fetal issues, maternal pelvic narrowing, uterine or vaginal structural abnormalities, or weak/abnormal uterine contractions—resulting in difficult delivery that requires assisted birth or cesarean section. Clinically, this manifests as slow or even halted labor progression. Successful vaginal delivery depends on three key factors: labor force, birth canal, and the fetus. During delivery, an excessively large fetus with a large cephalic diameter may cause difficult labor due to relative pelvic narrowing, even if pelvic measurements are normal, because the fetal head is disproportionate to the pelvis.Even fetuses of average weight can cause difficult labor if the fetal head is abnormally positioned. How to Reduce the Risk of Difficult Labor
1. Early Detection
The causes of difficult labor are sometimes clear, such as obvious pelvic abnormalities or fetal malpresentation, which can be identified during prenatal checkups or at the onset of labor and addressed promptly. Therefore, it is essential for pregnant women to undergo regular prenatal examinations at designated hospitals throughout their pregnancy.During these checkups, doctors monitor fetal growth within the uterus and can promptly identify any maternal factors that may lead to difficult labor. Should any abnormal trends emerge, effective corrective measures can be taken. 2. Maintain balanced nutrition and avoid excessive eating that causes fetal obesity. Fetal macrosomia is now the primary cause of difficult labor.With improved living standards and the prevalence of only children, families often dote excessively on expectant mothers. This leads to over-supplementation of nutrients, resulting in both maternal and fetal obesity, which significantly complicates delivery. Experts emphasize that weight gain during pregnancy should be controlled within the reasonable range of 10–14 kilograms. If the baby's head is too large (BPD exceeding 10 cm), delivery becomes difficult. Once BPD surpasses 10.5 cm, vaginal delivery becomes impossible.Therefore, balanced nutrition during pregnancy that meets the fetus's developmental needs is sufficient.
3. Regular prenatal checkups reduce or eliminate factors causing difficult labor related to the mother or fetus.

Some expectant mothers avoid exercise due to personal preference or concerns about fetal safety during pregnancy, which is highly inadvisable. Experts advise that, if physically capable, pregnant women should engage in appropriate exercise. Childbirth is an extremely energy-intensive and physically demanding process, and mothers-to-be should build up their strength for a smooth delivery.Some women lack sufficient stamina during labor, leading to prolonged delivery and potential fetal hypoxia.
