As temperatures rise in spring, many people find themselves increasingly prone to drowsiness. The best remedy for spring fatigue is ensuring adequate sleep, with afternoon naps being particularly crucial. While a proper nap offers significant health benefits, many wake up feeling more tired, with neck discomfort or a sore throat. In fact, these issues stem from improper sleeping positions. So what are the drawbacks of sleeping with your head on the desk?
Drawbacks of Sleeping with Head on Desk
1. Nerve Compression and Anxiety
Resting your head on your arms compresses multiple nerves, often leading to anxiety and restless sleep during naps.
2. Curved posture impairs breathing
The hunched position restricts chest expansion, hindering breathing and reducing oxygen supply. Chest compression may trigger cardiac issues. This posture impedes respiratory efficiency, particularly affecting women by limiting oxygen delivery and potentially damaging the brain.
3. Eye Strain and Vision Deterioration
The pressure on the eyeballs from sleeping on one's stomach often causes temporary blurred vision after naps. Individuals with high myopia should be especially cautious. Prolonged exposure to this posture can elevate intraocular pressure, leading to eye congestion. Over time, this may cause the eyeball to enlarge and the eye axis to lengthen, resulting in high myopia. It also increases the risk of developing glaucoma.
4. Nerve Numbness and Facial Deformation
Sleeping on one's stomach causes prolonged pressure on the arms and face, disrupting normal blood circulation and nerve conduction. This can result in numbness or soreness in the arms and face. Over time, it may progress to localized nerve paralysis or facial deformation.
5. Indigestion, Dizziness, Tinnitus
Most people eat a substantial lunch, which requires approximately three hours to digest. Lying down immediately after eating can cause stomach bloating.
Immediately after eating, the stomach requires substantial blood flow for digestion. Sleeping in a prone position exacerbates cerebral ischemia, ultimately causing dizziness, tinnitus, leg weakness, and numbness in the feet.
6. Testicle compression, sperm loss
Many men prefer sleeping on their stomachs. This prone position not only compresses internal organs and restricts breathing but also impacts the reproductive system. The risks are particularly significant for younger men.
7. Slowed Heart Rate and Cerebral Hypoxia
During sleep, the heart rate gradually decreases, and blood flow through tissues slows down. This reduces blood supply to the brain. After lunch, more blood flows to the gastrointestinal tract to aid digestion. Sleeping on your stomach exacerbates cerebral hypoxia, ultimately causing symptoms like dizziness, tinnitus, and leg weakness or numbness.
8. Neck Stiffness and Cervical Spine Disorders
The most noticeable sensation after waking from sleeping on a desk is neck stiffness and numbness in the arms. If symptoms worsen and interfere with daily activities, it may indicate cervical spondylosis.Sleeping with your head on the desk most commonly causes cervical spondylosis with radiculopathy. This occurs because the relaxation of the neck and shoulder ligaments accelerates intervertebral disc degeneration, leading to rupture of the annulus fibrosus and posterior protrusion of the nucleus pulposus, which compresses the nerve roots.
Clinical manifestations include pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. Patients often experience muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, and may even have radiating pain, numbness, and weakness in the upper limbs and fingers.During examination, doctors may observe a stiff neck, neck muscle spasm, a tendency to tilt the head toward the affected side, and elevated shoulders.
First, prolonged sleeping on one's stomach compresses the scrotum and stimulates the penis, potentially causing frequent nocturnal emissions. Frequent nocturnal emissions can lead to dizziness, back pain, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. In severe cases, it may interfere with normal work and daily life. Young men are inherently sensitive to penile stimulation and should avoid this sleeping position. Additionally, individuals experiencing frequent nocturnal emissions should be cautious, as this sleeping position may exacerbate the condition.
