Today, workplace stress has become one of the primary culprits behind health issues. Recent data released by the National Health Insurance Service reveals that men in their 30s in South Korea have the poorest health. Not only do they have the highest obesity rates, but to cope with workplace demands, they often smoke excessively and engage in the least amount of physical activity.
The survey revealed that men in their 30s have the highest obesity rate (41.1%) and smoking rate (52.8%). Among them, only 5.7% consistently engage in moderate-intensity exercise ("exercise that leaves you slightly out of breath") for at least 30 minutes, five times a week—the lowest proportion across all age groups.
This data was derived from analyzing health checkup results of over 11 million individuals covered by health insurance companies. The insurers noted that men in their 30s often smoke excessively to cope with workplace demands and lack time for exercise. Combined with high alcohol consumption and meat intake, this leads to severe obesity issues.
The survey revealed obesity and smoking rates among all Korean men stand at 38.1% and 42.2% respectively, with an average physical activity rate of 8.4%. For women, those under 20 had the highest smoking rate at 6.3%, while women in their 70s had the highest obesity rate at 39.1%.The overall average obesity and smoking rates for all women are 25.9% and 3.3%, respectively.
Active Rest Methods for Working Men
Approach Life with a Positive and Optimistic Attitude
For men facing high work stress, overcoming daily tension and adopting a positive outlook on life is undoubtedly beneficial.
Optimism itself serves as a form of rest.
Engage in Regular Physical Activity
For male office workers engaged in intellectual labor, prolonged desk work can lead to mental fatigue. This can be alleviated through physical exertion.
Ideally, take breaks for outdoor exercise after working for a period, or perform indoor calisthenics during work intervals—this constitutes active rest.
Generally, incorporating regular radio calisthenics into mental work routines is most effective. Prolonged sitting often causes temporary neck soreness; if relaxation through neck exercises fails to alleviate discomfort, seek specialized examination.
Overcoming Inertia
Rest does not equate to lax, unengaging relaxation. Rest should be lively and engaging. Men should recognize that rest is not merely passive downtime; it should replenish physical energy, bring joy, foster vitality, and contribute to harmony within family and society.
Harmonious Sexual Activity
Many believe sexual activity increases fatigue.Experts point out that normal sexual activity does not increase fatigue. It is a form of active rest that promotes blood circulation and aids in expelling acidic metabolic waste produced by fatigue. Moreover, during intercourse, the body releases endorphins—natural painkillers that relax the nervous system and boost immunity. A sexless marriage, in fact, represents a health deficit.
At work, some men push themselves relentlessly to prove their capabilities or demonstrate dedication, often neglecting their physical well-being. In reality, truly effective men are also skilled at resting. They never squander opportunities for rest, knowing it directly benefits their productivity the next day.
