Today, many men suffer from poor sleep quality due to high stress from work and social obligations, irregular eating and sleeping patterns, severely impacting their physical and mental health as well as overall appearance. So what can men do about poor sleep quality? How can they improve it?
Poor sleep primarily manifests in four ways:
1. Early awakening: Waking up much earlier than usual, or being unable to fall back asleep after waking in the middle of the night.Mentally, this leads to daytime drowsiness and fatigue. Chronic insomnia can also cause dizziness, palpitations, poor concentration, and memory decline.
2. Difficulty falling asleep: Prolonged time to fall asleep, tossing and turning. Habitual inability to sleep regardless of external disturbances, even when extremely tired.
3. Insufficient sleep depth: Easily awakened during the night, restless sleep. Feeling as though you haven't slept at all after a full night's rest, experiencing dizziness, fatigue, or even listlessness.
4. Insufficient sleep duration: Waking up too early, waking up long before usual, or waking up in the middle of the night and being unable to fall back asleep.
3. Insufficient sleep depth: Frequent nighttime awakenings, restless sleep, feeling groggy and exhausted despite a full night's rest, or even persistent lethargy.Nightmares may manifest as anxiety, with the tension, worry, or fear in dreams potentially reflecting unresolved emotions needing attention.
Poor sleep inevitably impacts physical health and may lead to chronic health issues over time. Men experiencing sleep difficulties should therefore prioritize addressing this issue.
I. Dietary Approaches to Sleep Improvement
Lily Bulb and Lotus Seed Porridge:
Take 30g each of dried lily bulbs, lotus seeds (with cores, soaked in water), and rock sugar, plus 100g of rice. Simmer the dried lily bulbs, rice, and lotus seeds together in a pot. Add rock sugar when nearly done. This porridge clears heat, nourishes yin, moistens the lungs, and calms the spirit. It is suitable for those with insomnia, frequent dreams, excessive heart fire, anxiety, and irritability.
Sour Jujube Seed Porridge:
15g ground sour jujube seeds, 100g japonica rice. Cook rice first, then add ground seeds and simmer for 5 minutes. Nourishes the heart, calms the spirit, and reduces sweating. Suitable for insomnia, vivid dreams, palpitations, restlessness, and weakness with excessive sweating.
Stewed Black Chicken with Chestnuts and Red Dates:
1 black chicken, cleaned and cut into pieces. Place in a clay pot with 20 shelled chestnuts and 20 red dates. Add water and simmer over low heat until the chicken is tender. This recipe strengthens the spleen and stomach, nourishes the kidneys, and replenishes essence. It is suitable for insomnia and frequent dreams caused by spleen-stomach deficiency and qi-blood insufficiency.
II. Daytime Outdoor Exercise
During work breaks, men should aim to walk outdoors and engage in moderate exercise that promotes sweating. This activates the sympathetic nervous system over the parasympathetic system, restoring autonomic balance. The result is increased morning alertness and improved nighttime sleep.
III. Proper Sleep Preparation
1. Foot Soaking for Better Sleep
Foot soaking differs from regular foot washing. To achieve its benefits, feet must be immersed sufficiently to reach a certain level of stimulation. Begin by pouring a small amount of hot water until it covers the top of the feet. Ensure the water temperature is not too hot—around 40°C (104°F) is ideal. As the water cools, gradually add hot water to maintain the temperature until your feet turn red, you feel warmth throughout your body, and you begin to sweat slightly.
Winter foot soaks stimulate blood circulation and warm the body. Soaking before bed improves sleep quality, but avoid prolonged sessions—15 to 30 minutes is optimal to prevent increased cardiac strain. While soaking, gently rub the soles of your feet, especially the Yongquan acupoint. This not only improves sleep quality but also offers health benefits. 2. Avoid Smoking and Drinking Before Bed Refrain from consuming stimulants before bedtime and focus on self-relaxation. Avoid caffeine intake 4 hours before sleep, steer clear of alcoholic beverages, and refrain from smoking 1 hour before bed.Consider reading, listening to music, taking a warm bath, or inhaling soothing scents to unwind. Muscle relaxation exercises can also be beneficial.
3. Cultivate a positive mindset before bed
A calm state of mind facilitates faster sleep onset and improves sleep quality. Methods for achieving this vary by individual—listening to favorite songs or recalling happy memories can help. Crucially, avoid dwelling on troublesome thoughts.
