The "kidney" referred to in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) does not correspond to the Western medical concept of the kidneys. Instead, it encompasses multiple systems including the endocrine, reproductive, and urinary systems. It regulates bodily functions, providing the "vital energy" and "driving force" for life activities, serving as the foundation of innate constitution. To put it plainly, kidney deficiency is an abstract concept. Blindly supplementing the kidneys based on one or two symptoms is unscientific. Therefore, diagnosing kidney deficiency must be done by a licensed TCM practitioner. Misdiagnosed kidney deficiency often stems from numerous misconceptions.
Lower back pain and erectile dysfunction aren't necessarily kidney deficiency
It's understood that many men believe they have kidney deficiency largely due to exaggerated claims by unscrupulous pharmaceutical companies. For instance, the oft-heard advertising slogan "Nine out of ten men have kidney deficiency" leads many men to "check the box," attributing everyday symptoms like lower back pain, frequent urination, and weakness to kidney deficiency, then seeking corresponding health supplements at pharmacies.Professor He Xuehong explains that many of these patients do not actually suffer from kidney deficiency, and their so-called symptoms do not prove it.
Is lower back pain always kidney deficiency? Professor He explains that conditions in internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, and orthopedics can all cause lower back pain or soreness. Traditional Chinese Medicine attributes these symptoms to external pathogens like wind, cold, and dampness; overwork or injury damaging the lumbar muscles, spine, or meridians; chronic illness leading to physical weakness; aging with depletion of essence and blood; or excessive sexual activity. Thus, lower back pain does not necessarily indicate kidney deficiency.
Does feeling cold indicate kidney deficiency? Traditional Chinese medicine holds that the kidneys are the root of yin and yang in the body. Thus, those with kidney yang deficiency often experience aversion to cold, cold limbs, and clear, prolonged urination. However, aversion to cold can stem from both exterior and interior patterns, as well as deficiencies in spleen yang or kidney yang, and cannot be attributed solely to kidney deficiency.
Does physical weakness indicate kidney deficiency?Traditional Chinese medicine theory states that the kidneys store primordial yin and yang, govern bone marrow production, and store essence. Thus, ancient texts refer to the kidneys as the "root of innate constitution." Insufficient kidney qi naturally leads to weakened constitution and weakness in the lower back and knees. However, many factors can cause physical weakness, such as spleen-stomach dysfunction, lung qi deficiency, liver blood insufficiency, or heart yin depletion. Physical weakness is a deficiency syndrome, but it does not necessarily equate to kidney deficiency.
Is Impotence Equivalent to Kidney Deficiency? Impotence refers to the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. Traditional Chinese Medicine attributes this primarily to excessive sexual activity, leading to severe depletion of kidney qi. However, clinical observations reveal cases stemming from heart-spleen qi deficiency or psychological factors like fear. Other causes include damp-heat descending, stagnant liver qi, blood stasis, or qi and blood deficiency. With numerous contributing factors, impotence is not synonymous with kidney deficiency. Regularly Massage Three Areas to Nourish Kidneys and Strengthen Yang I. Massage the Lumbosacral Region The lumbosacral area is another TCM massage site for nurturing vitality. Sit on a chair, press both palms together with fingers slightly spread, and apply moderate pressure while simultaneously kneading both sides of the lumbosacral region for about 5 minutes.Next, use both thumbs to knead the Shenshu (BL23) and Mingmen (GV4) points for 1–2 minutes each. Then, use your right palm to rub horizontally across the Shenshu, Mingmen, and Bagu (BL39) areas until warmth penetrates the skin.
2. Massage the Lower Abdomen
Focus on the lower abdomen between the navel and external genitalia, bounded on either side by the anterior superior iliac spines. To massage, lie supine on the bed. Place both hands overlapping at the center of the lower abdomen, pressing firmly against the belly. Massage slowly at a rate of about 10 times per minute until warmth is felt within the lower abdomen. Continue for 5 minutes.
III. Testicle Massage
Before sleeping and upon waking, lie on the bed with legs naturally straight and slightly apart.Rub hands together until warm. Place one hand on the lower abdomen. Use the thumb and index finger of the other hand to encircle the testicle, positioning it in the web of the hand. Gently pinch the testicle with the remaining three fingers, silently counting to 81. Then switch hands and repeat on the other testicle. Maintain focused concentration during massage; if an erection occurs, exercise restraint. After massaging the testicles, use one hand to rub circles around the navel, 81 times clockwise and 81 times counterclockwise. Note: Testicle massage should be gentle, adhering to the principles of lightness, softness, slowness, and evenness. Additionally, individuals with certain organic reproductive system disorders, such as epididymitis or testicular tuberculosis, should not use this method.
