Higher IQ in Men Correlates with More Active Sperm

Researchers found that individuals who perform better on intelligence tests often have more active sperm. The findings were published in the latest issue of Intelligence. This new research clearly supports a previous theory: genes determining intelligence also influence other biological functions. Thus, any minor changes impairing intelligence may harm other genetic traits, such as sperm quality.
In other words, individuals with healthy genes are more likely to possess what biology terms "health factors," which contribute to greater overall health and intelligence. Scientists previously often attributed the relationship between intelligence and health to lifestyle factors. For example, individuals with higher IQs are less likely to smoke and more likely to exercise. Experts believe both smoking and exercise can impact cognitive performance.
The latest research tests this genetic theory by examining two seemingly unrelated traits: intelligence and sperm quality. Results reveal a small yet statistically significant correlation between the two, suggesting this link cannot be fully explained by unhealthy habits like smoking or drinking. The study involved 425 men who underwent multiple intelligence tests and provided semen samples.Researchers discovered that, when controlling for age and lifestyle factors, men with higher IQs demonstrated superior performance across three key indicators of sperm quality: count, concentration, and motility.
Dr. Allan Pacy, a fertility expert at the University of Sheffield in the UK, stated: "The statistical link found between adult male intelligence and semen quality likely reflects the co-development of the brain and testes during fetal development in the womb, and how well they function in adulthood. It does not suggest that playing brain-teasing games like Sudoku somehow stimulates sperm production."
Elevated testicular temperature impacts sperm count and quality
Testicular temperature is intrinsically linked to male fertility. It affects not only the quantity of sperm produced but also their quality.
