Facial care matters for both men and women. Some men believe skincare is solely for women, prioritizing career over personal grooming—a misconception. So how should men maintain their skin? Today we'll cover the essentials.
When it comes to self-care, guys often dread the hassle. Many aren't afraid to invest money, but they're reluctant to spend too much time and effort on their appearance. While plenty consider themselves handsome, even more handsome guys neglect proper skincare.Truthfully, I'm also someone who dislikes hassle. Living in a high-latitude region with dry air and harsh climatic conditions, I frequently encounter skin issues like dryness, flaking, wrinkles, acne, or excessive oiliness. If you want to make a positive first impression, presenting a presentable appearance is essential. Choosing simple yet effective facial care methods is therefore quite necessary.
Cleansing
Cleansing is the foundation of men's skincare, especially before shaving. Make sure to thoroughly cleanse your facial skin. Men should be meticulous during cleansing—once done, your skin will instantly feel soft and clean, and it's not as tedious as it seems. However, if you have acne-prone skin, never be careless, as this could lead to scarring after the acne heals.Excellent choices include beauty soaps, plant-based or nourishing cleansers, acne-fighting washes, scrubs, shaving creams, shaving foams, toners, and men's sunscreen. Use twice daily for about 3 minutes each time.
Proper Shaving
Men's beards grow quickly, and some have particularly thick facial hair, requiring frequent shaving and trimming.Shave in the morning when the face and skin are relaxed.
Best approach: Use high-quality, low-irritation shaving cream or soap, mild aftershave, and a premium razor. Apply shaving cream and let it soften the beard for two minutes before shaving to avoid skin irritation.
Moisturizing
While men's sebum production effectively shields skin from sun damage, it doesn't provide sufficient hydration. As men age, metabolism slows, hormonal balance shifts, and localized sebum overproduction occurs. Combined with testosterone stimulation and higher activity levels than women, men's skin produces more oil. You might mistakenly assume your skin is oily enough and requires no care.In reality, the skin is dehydrated, creating an opening for wrinkles to form. Therefore, hydration is not just for dry skin—it's essential for oily skin too.
For men with time and willingness to invest effort, completing the above basic skincare steps might still feel insufficient. Moreover, differences in skin type, work environments, and lifestyles should not be underestimated.Based on individual skin conditions, men who find it necessary may incorporate the following steps: Exfoliation Since most men have larger facial pores that are prone to oiliness and more susceptible to absorbing external impurities, regular facial exfoliation is crucial.
