It is widely known that hot springs offer numerous health benefits. The minerals in hot spring water can smooth and moisturize the skin while alleviating joint discomfort. However, for individuals with psoriasis, hot spring bathing requires caution and individualized consideration. For patients in the quiescent phase, hot spring bathing may help improve psoriasis symptoms, promote local blood circulation, and provide anti-itch effects. However, during the active phase when psoriasis flares are common, the water temperature's stimulation and removal of sebum can intensify itching. Therefore, the decision to bathe should be based on specific circumstances.
Medical journals and health reports suggest hot spring bathing may treat psoriasis. To determine suitability for hot spring therapy, we must first understand its effects. Hot spring bathing not only relaxes muscles and joints while relieving fatigue but also dilates blood vessels, promotes circulation, and accelerates metabolism.
Hot spring water contains abundant chemical substances beneficial to the human body. Its rich calcium, potassium, and radon content can help regulate cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and treat conditions like diabetes, gout, neuralgia, and arthritis. Sulfur springs soften keratinized skin, while sodium-rich carbonated water has a bleaching and softening effect on the skin.
Despite these health benefits, hot spring bathing isn't suitable for everyone. Sulfur and other acidic/alkaline substances in the water can reduce inflammation and kill bacteria, making them effective for certain infectious or parasitic skin conditions. However, they may also irritate skin, worsen wounds, or even cause "hot spring dermatitis." Therefore, individuals with specific skin conditions should assess their situation carefully.
Psoriasis is a severe skin condition that, if left untreated, causes significant skin damage and is prone to recurrence. Patients must prioritize skin protection: avoid harsh, strongly alkaline bath products; wear cotton undergarments; limit spicy, irritating foods and raw/cold items; and increase intake of vitamins and protein.
