Aim for one daily bowel movement, ideally after breakfast. After eating, food entering the stomach triggers the "gastric-colonic reflex," stimulating gastrointestinal motility and generating peristaltic waves that facilitate the defecation reflex. Defecation itself is a reflexive action that can be conditioned through repetition.Persistent adherence to a regular bowel schedule will gradually establish this conditioned reflex. Once habitualized, timely, smooth, and efficient bowel movements become achievable.
Frequently ignoring the urge to defecate or forcibly suppressing it prevents timely stool expulsion. When feces remain in the intestines too long, they dry out, causing constipation. Over time, this also diminishes the rectum's ability to sense stool presence, leading to rectal constipation.
Focus your attention during bowel movements. Avoid distractions like reading newspapers, novels, or listening to the radio while defecating. Strive to shorten the time spent on the toilet, but ensure sufficient time to fully empty your bowels.
Avoid indiscriminate use of laxatives at the first sign of constipation. Overuse can disrupt normal gastrointestinal activity and absorption functions. Frequent laxative abuse may paradoxically lead to chronic constipation, diarrhea, or fecal incontinence.
