While winter is beloved by many, some individuals struggle with cold sensitivity. Beyond exercise and layered clothing, incorporating warming foods into daily meals can enhance the body's resistance to cold. So what foods provide warmth for those who feel the chill?
Meats: Dog meat, lamb, beef, and venison are particularly effective for warmth. Rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fats, they benefit kidney function, invigorate yang energy, warm the middle and lower body, and enhance qi and blood circulation. Consuming these meats accelerates metabolism in yang-deficient constitutions and strengthens endocrine function, thereby providing cold resistance.
Root Vegetables: Medical research indicates that cold sensitivity may relate to mineral deficiencies.Lotus root, carrots, lily bulbs, sweet potatoes, greens, and Chinese cabbage are rich in inorganic salts. Incorporating these foods into meals is advisable. Spicy Foods: Chili peppers contain capsaicin, ginger contains aromatic volatile oils, and black pepper contains piperine. Iron-rich foods: Researchers at Pennsylvania State University found that iron deficiency in the blood also contributes to sensitivity to cold.
Women with anemia have body temperatures 0.7°C lower than those with normal hemoglobin levels and produce 13% less heat. Increasing iron intake significantly enhances their cold tolerance. Therefore, women who feel cold can consciously increase consumption of iron-rich foods such as animal liver, lean meat, spinach, and egg yolks.
Thyroid hormones possess thermogenic effects. They accelerate oxidative processes in most bodily tissues (excluding the brain, glands, and uterus), boosting heat production, elevating basal metabolic rate, enhancing skin blood circulation, and improving cold resistance.
