What Should Young People Do About Hypertension?
If left unaddressed, hypertension in young adults can still cause significant harm to the body. So, what should young people do about high blood pressure?
1. Get a thorough examination before treatment
Since this condition can occur at any age, and the causes vary by age group, young patients may develop it due to improper lifestyle habits. Therefore, it's essential to undergo a comprehensive examination before starting treatment.
2. Measure blood pressure 30 minutes after meals, three times daily
Blood pressure has specific reference ranges. Avoid strenuous activity before each measurement. Test 30 minutes after eating, ideally three times daily over consecutive days for accurate results.
3. Quit smoking and drinking
While tobacco and alcohol may seem commonplace among many young people, eliminating these habits is crucial for those with hypertension—especially smoking. Research confirms smoking is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease and malignant hypertension. Young hypertensive patients should establish a feasible quit plan and commit to quitting.
4. Adjust Diet
In daily life, avoid foods high in sodium, cholesterol, and alcohol. Limit salt or sodium-containing seasonings, canned goods, pickled foods, egg yolks, animal organs, and animal fats. Increase intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as those found in fresh fish, which aid in blood pressure control and help prevent future coronary atherosclerosis.
5. Develop a Habit of Regular Aerobic Exercise
This is especially crucial for younger individuals. Aim for three to five sessions per week, each lasting 30 to 45 minutes. Focus on activities like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, slow jogging, or stair climbing. Avoid isometric exercises that elevate blood pressure, such as weightlifting, wrestling, or rowing.Progress exercise intensity gradually. If experiencing dizziness, shortness of breath, or chest tightness, stop immediately and consult a physician.
