Are Ancient Child-Rearing Views Still Relevant Today?Today, we journey back to ancient times to critically examine traditional childcare practices through a modern scientific lens, continuing to promote the profound wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine.
1. Wiping the Mouth and Cleaning the Eyes
Newborns often have amniotic fluid or bloodstains in their mouths, which must be promptly removed—a practice known as wiping the mouth.If not promptly addressed, swallowing these substances can adversely affect the baby's health. Ancient practitioners highly valued this practice, believing proper care would foster intelligence, robust growth, and easier recovery from illness. Conversely, ingesting impurities could lead to lifelong complications. Thus, they regarded mouth wiping as an essential routine for newborns.
In modern times, when a newborn leaves the mother's body, obstetricians also use sterilized gauze to gently wipe away impurities from the baby's mouth—including amniotic fluid, meconium, and blood—to prevent ingestion during crying. Simultaneously, debris from the baby's eyes and ears should be gently removed to prevent infections in these areas.
Special Note: Vernix caseosa on a newborn's skin provides protective benefits and should not be immediately wiped away. However, skin folds and perineal areas should be gently cleaned with gauze dipped in sterilized vegetable oil to remove excess residue.
2. Umbilical Cord Care and Protection
In the womb, the umbilical cord serves as the vital link connecting the mother and baby through meridians and blood flow.Upon birth, the baby's first cry opens the nasal and oral passages, allowing qi and blood to flow freely through all meridians as the infant begins independent life. Immediately after birth, the umbilical cord must be cut. Ancient practices placed great emphasis on proper cord care, developing a scientific, effective, though rudimentary, method under historical constraints. These methods still offer valuable insights today.
What are common umbilical cord issues in newborns?
After the umbilical cord is cut, various conditions may develop at the site if the ligature is too loose, sterilization is inadequate, or improper care leads to contamination. Persistent moisture that fails to dry is termed umbilical dampness; redness, swelling, ulceration, and pus discharge are called umbilical sores.These two conditions are essentially the same disease, differing only in severity. Modern medicine collectively refers to them as umbilical inflammation. A bulging, inflated umbilical protrusion is called an umbilical hernia, termed "umbilical protrusion" in traditional Chinese medicine. If infection spreads to the bloodstream, it can cause neonatal sepsis, which requires serious attention.
Ancient practitioners advocated severing the umbilical cord by "biting it off, cauterizing it with fire, or cutting it with heated scissors";After severing the cord, "apply three moxa cones to the stump to warm the abdomen and prevent umbilical wind disease. Additionally, wrap the umbilicus with moxa leaves pounded into a paste mixed with cotton batting, ensuring it remains secure. Otherwise, exposure to wind, cold, or dampness may cause umbilical wind or similar ailments."These were rudimentary umbilical care methods under the medical conditions of the time. Biting or cauterizing during cord cutting aimed to prevent infection, while post-cutting moxibustion and cotton wrapping served both to ward off cold and further guard against infection.
With advances in modern obstetrics and gynecology alongside improved medical facilities, ancient umbilical cord cutting and care practices have been replaced by modern techniques. Sterile cord cutting no longer requires biting or cauterization, and post-cutting care follows professional sterile procedures.Typically, within 1–2 minutes after delivery, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut. Obstetricians must perform this procedure under sterile conditions using disposable umbilical scissors. The cord stump must undergo dry sterile processing and be covered with sterile dressing.If sterile conditions cannot be guaranteed under special circumstances, the umbilical stump should be re-disinfected and treated within 24 hours to prevent umbilical infection.
Umbilical care is essential after cord clamping. Keep the baby's umbilical area clean and dry, allowing the stump to fall off naturally within a few days.During this period, avoid exposing the umbilical area to contaminated water, urine, or other impurities. When bathing, ensure the umbilical area remains dry to prevent contamination and reduce the risk of umbilical infections.Infants with severe fetal toxins may exhibit symptoms at birth such as flushed face, red eyes, frequent crying with a loud cry, and constipation. Such infants are prone to conditions like erysipelas, eczema, jaundice, and mouth ulcers, or may develop a constitution susceptible to febrile illnesses later in life.
Traditional Chinese methods for removing fetal toxins in newborns have existed since ancient times. Administering small doses of herbal decoctions with heat-clearing and toxin-eliminating properties can reduce the incidence of these conditions.
Common methods include:
Honeysuckle and Licorice Method: 6g honeysuckle, 2g licorice. Decoct into a decoction. Use this liquid to wipe the baby's mouth and administer a small amount orally.
Coptis Method: 2g Coptis rhizome. Soak in water to extract juice. Drip the juice into the baby's mouth. Note: Coptis is cold in nature. Do not administer to babies with weak constitution, premature infants, those with weak cries, or those with neonatal diseases.
Rhubarb Method: 3g raw rhubarb. Soak in water to extract juice or briefly boil. Administer the juice by dripping into the baby's mouth. Discontinue once meconium is passed. However, babies with weak spleen and stomach, poor feeding, or prone to spitting up should not use this method.
In southern regions, particularly along the southeast coast, methods for "clearing fetal toxins" remain quite popular.Modern medicine views "fetal toxins" as a colloquial term for acute postnatal allergic conditions, primarily manifesting as various skin reactions in infants—such as eczema, hives, or herpes. When mothers consume excessive spicy or fried foods during pregnancy, they may transmit heat toxins to the fetus, predisposing the infant to heat-related illnesses after birth. How can fetal toxins be minimized?Modern Chinese medicine advocates the following approaches:
1. During pregnancy, mothers should focus on balanced nutrition, consuming foods that nourish yin, moisturize dryness, generate fluids, and support lung health, along with seasonal fruits. Limit intake of spicy, fried, and greasy foods to maintain regular bowel movements.
2. If the mother has an allergic constitution, it is advisable to undergo detailed allergy testing at a formal hospital's allergy department (skin allergy clinic) or seek expert advice to avoid passing these allergens to the baby through breast milk.
3. Mothers should maintain a regular lifestyle, balancing work and rest, and ensure adequate rest to preserve bodily equilibrium and enhance immunity.
4.Avoid indiscriminate medication for "cleansing fetal toxins." Certain folk remedies, turtle jelly, or herbal teas contain ingredients unsuitable for pregnant women and pose risks if taken blindly.
5. Ensure adequate sleep and healthy metabolism.
Four Special Physiological Conditions in Newborns
Newborns exhibit the following four special physiological states. New mothers should not mistake them for illness.
1. "Milk teeth." Scattered yellowish-white, rice-grain-sized bumps appear along the midline of the upper palate and gums. Known as "milk teeth" in traditional Chinese medicine, these will disappear on their own within weeks or months after birth. Mothers must not pick or scrape them. The baby's skin and mucous membranes are extremely delicate and prone to infection if injured.
2. Breast swelling.Female infants may develop breast swelling 3–5 days after birth, resembling the size of a broad bean or pigeon egg. This occurs due to exposure to high levels of hormones like prolactin in the mother's blood during gestation, causing mammary gland hyperplasia. Within 2–3 weeks postpartum, hormonal levels gradually decrease, leading to complete breakdown and elimination of these substances. The breast swelling will naturally resolve on its own. Mothers should not attempt to manipulate or squeeze the swollen areas.
3. "Pseudomenstruation." A small amount of vaginal bleeding may occur 5–7 days after birth, lasting 1–3 days before resolving on its own. This phenomenon, also influenced by maternal hormones in utero, is termed "pseudomenstruation" and generally requires no intervention.
4. "Mantis Pads."Newborns have prominent fat pads on both cheeks, known as "mantises." These aid in milk sucking and must never be picked or cut.
