What is the difference between high-molecular-weight and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid?
High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid provides filling and shaping effects, primarily used in contouring procedures like breast augmentation, buttock enhancement, rhinoplasty, and chin augmentation. It targets deep tissue layers. This form can also be used for wrinkle reduction by injecting it as a filler into dermal folds, depressions, or areas requiring volume enhancement, such as the lips, cheeks, and chin. The wrinkle-reducing effects of macromolecular hyaluronic acid last relatively longer.
Medium-molecular hyaluronic acid is typically used for wrinkle reduction, injected into areas like tear troughs, lips, and areas with prominent wrinkles. It also has a filling effect on depressions. However, like macromolecular hyaluronic acid, medium-molecular hyaluronic acid is injected into deep tissue layers and cannot be used to fill superficial skin layers.
Low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid consists of water-like molecules primarily used for full-face dermal injections. It replenishes moisture in the dermis, repairs damaged skin, and provides hydration and skin rejuvenation, complementing the limitations of high- and medium-molecular-weight formulations.
It cannot be denied that some individuals undergo minimally invasive injections without proper understanding, often unaware of hyaluronic acid's functions post-treatment. In reality, there are seven major categories, each with distinct molecular sizes, duration of effect, and indications tailored to specific facial areas. It is crucial to understand these differences for correct application.
The sequence of hyaluronic acid types used varies:
Hyaluronic acid injections follow the principle of injecting larger molecules first—beginning with larger-molecule hyaluronic acid in deeper layers (near the periosteum). This acts like laying a foundation, using a sturdier, firmer substance to support the structure. Smaller-molecule hyaluronic acid is then used to fill the superficial dermal layer, creating a smooth surface. Thus, hyaluronic acid injections not only enhance facial contours but also tighten the skin and restore smoothness.
