Men often cross their legs in daily life—during meetings, while riding in vehicles—instinctively adopting this posture. Etiquette guides consistently advise against this unrefined gesture, yet its impact extends beyond manners to directly affect men's health, particularly reproductive well-being. So what are the health risks of men crossing their legs?
Health Risks of Men Crossing Their Legs
Condition 1:May trigger varicose veins or blood clots in the legs.
When crossing legs, the knee being pressed down experiences compression, easily disrupting blood circulation in the lower limbs. Keeping both legs motionless in one position for extended periods can cause numbness. If blood flow is further impeded, it may lead to varicose veins or blood clots in the legs. This is especially concerning for elderly individuals with hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease, as prolonged leg crossing can worsen their conditions.
Disease 2: Causes spinal deformation and lower back pain.
Gao Xinsheng, an orthopedic surgeon at Beijing Hospital, explains that the human spine should naturally form an S-shape when viewed from the side. Crossing one leg over the other often leads to slouching and hunching. Over time, this can reshape the spine into a C-shape, causing uneven pressure distribution on the lumbar and thoracic vertebrae. Prolonged strain may compress spinal nerves, resulting in lower back pain.
Condition 3: Impacts male reproductive health. The habit of crossing legs is detrimental to reproductive health. When crossing legs, the thighs are often pressed tightly together, raising the temperature in the inner thighs and genital area. For men, this heat can damage sperm, potentially affecting fertility over time. Therefore, Li Hongjun recommends limiting leg crossing to no more than 10 minutes at a time. Avoid crossing legs too tightly. If you notice sweat forming on the inner thighs, walk in a well-ventilated area to dissipate heat quickly. Especially when riding public transportation, sudden braking can cause crossed legs to remain elevated, potentially leading to joint dislocation or muscle strain.
Condition 4: Skeletal abnormalities or muscle strain.
Prolonged pressure on the pelvis and hip joints while crossing legs can cause soreness, potentially leading to skeletal issues or muscle strain over time. If experiencing back or waist pain, try two minutes of stretching or chest expansion exercises, gently rotate your neck side to side, or rest against the chair for a moment.Men may also frequently sit for extended periods or maintain fixed postures due to work demands. This is equally inadvisable. It's best to engage in fitness exercises periodically or simply walk around more often to prevent orthopedic issues.
Crossing legs may offer temporary relief, but it poses numerous risks to men. Men should minimize this habit for better health.
