What is Kidney Deficiency?
"Kidney deficiency" is a unique concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Broadly speaking, nearly all physical ailments can be traced back to "kidney deficiency." TCM holds that the kidneys store essence, govern water metabolism, control bones, regulate breathing, open into the ears, and oversee urination and defecation. Dysfunction in these areas typically indicates kidney deficiency.
Kidney deficiency can be categorized into two types: kidney yin deficiency and kidney yang deficiency. Kidney yin deficiency manifests as symptoms such as soreness in the lower back and knees, dizziness and tinnitus, insomnia with vivid dreams, hot flashes and night sweats, dry throat and flushed cheeks, a red tongue with little coating, and a thin pulse. Medications like Liuwei Dihuang Pills or Zuogui Pills can be taken.
What causes kidney deficiency?
1. Often due to excessive sexual activity or frequent masturbation during adolescence.
2. Excessive worry and depression damage the heart and spleen, affecting the Yangming and Chong meridians.
3. Fear injures the kidneys; excessive fear harms kidney function.
4. The liver governs the tendons, and the genitalia are the convergence point of the tendons. If emotions are suppressed—such as through worry, depression, or anger—the liver fails to regulate and disperse energy properly, leading to dysfunction in the tendons.
5. Damp-heat descending causes the tendons to become lax and slack.
