As the vital pillars of modern society, men's health remains a primary focus of our attention. However, with societal advancement, demands on personal life and work have intensified, leading to increasing numbers of individuals—particularly men—operating in a state of suboptimal health. Consequently, male infertility is becoming more prevalent, with a significant number of cases involving yellowish semen. So why does semen turn yellow in men?
Why does male semen turn yellow?
Normal semen should be milky white or slightly yellow. Yellow semen indicates potential health issues. The color of semen is determined by its components. Semen consists of sperm and seminal plasma. Sperm accounts for only a small portion, while seminal plasma makes up over 90%. Seminal plasma is secreted by accessory glands such as the prostate, seminal vesicles, bulbourethral glands, and paraurethral glands. Its primary component is water, along with fats, protein particles, pigment granules, lecithin bodies, enzymes, fructose, and other substances.
What causes yellow semen in men? Yellow semen generally stems from two causes: normal yellowing and pathological yellowing.
Causes of Normal Yellowing
If abnormal yellowing occurs only occasionally, it is not considered pathological and requires no medical intervention. This is likely caused by prolonged abstinence from ejaculation.Prolonged absence of ejaculation causes semen to remain stored in the body. Over time, the semen undergoes chemical changes, leading to yellowing. This condition is usually temporary and resolves with resumed sexual activity.
Pathological Causes of Yellow Semen
Persistent abnormal yellowing of semen indicates inflammatory reactions within the male reproductive tract, such as prostatitis or seminal vesiculitis. These inflammations can impair semen motility. Untreated, they may degrade semen quality or even cause infertility. It is important to note that prostatic fluid secreted by the prostate constitutes a significant component of semen. Inflammation or infection of the prostate directly impacts semen quality.
How to prevent yellow semen?
During the acute phase, avoid semen duct examinations and prostate/seminal vesicle massages.
Practice abstinence. Avoid sexual arousal and temporarily suspend sexual activity, especially unprotected intercourse.
Maintain genital hygiene; circumcision is recommended for those with excessive foreskin.
During the chronic phase, warm sitz baths (not suitable for those who haven't fathered children) or herbal sitz baths may be used.
Adopt a light diet; avoid tobacco, alcohol, and spicy or irritating foods.
Balance work and rest; avoid prolonged sitting. Refrain from activities like cycling or horseback riding to reduce pressure on the perineum.
