Daily habits are closely linked to men's health. So what essential knowledge should men know about shaving? Below we outline when men should avoid shaving, which we believe will be helpful.
Men who shave infrequently have higher disease rates than daily shavers
Researchers published a report in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, stating that over 20 years, 835 participants died.Overall, 45% of those who did not shave daily passed away, compared to 31% of those who shaved at least once daily. The higher mortality rate among infrequent shavers was linked to higher smoking rates and poorer lifestyle habits. Researchers noted that while this doesn't fully explain their increased stroke risk, it does indicate a correlation between shaving frequency and disease susceptibility.
Beyond shaving habits, men's longevity is also linked to hormones.
Findings reveal that infrequent shavers were predominantly unmarried blue-collar workers; they experienced fewer sexual climaxes, were shorter in stature, and were more prone to angina.
Additionally, Professor Shah Ebrahim from the Department of Social Medicine stated in a declaration: "Higher mortality rates among infrequent shavers may stem from smoking and certain social factors, though hormones also play a minor role." He suggested that men who shave less frequently experience fewer sexual climaxes due to lower testosterone levels or simply fewer opportunities for sexual activity because they are unmarried.
Regarding the elevated stroke risk, one possible explanation is that circulating levels of sex hormones may influence the extent of fat deposition in arteries.
Many men mistakenly believe that a closer shave is better, unaware that this practice causes "razor bumps." Only very short hairs can re-enter the skin; the closer the shave, the more likely these short hairs are to grow inward, causing excruciating pain.
Razor bumps occur when hair re-enters the skin either before leaving the follicle or shortly after, triggering an inflammatory reaction that forms painful lumps.
Men should gently stretch the skin while shaving to reduce resistance and prevent nicks.Understand the direction of beard growth. Depending on facial hair patterns, shave from left to right and top to bottom, first with the grain and then against it. This allows shaving cream more time to soften the coarsest parts of short hairs. Shaving with the grain reduces skin redness and pain.
When Not to Shave
Many prefer shaving before showering, but this is actually inadvisable. Freshly shaved skin has numerous microscopic cuts invisible to the naked eye. Immediately showering afterward exposes these areas to irritants like body wash, shampoo, and hot water, potentially causing discomfort or redness.
Additionally, avoid shaving before exercise. Sweat can irritate freshly shaved skin during physical activity, leading to discomfort or even infection.
That concludes our guide on when men should avoid shaving. We hope you've gained valuable insights. Finally, we sincerely wish you good health and happiness.
