In China, nurturing kidney health has long been a fundamental practice in men's wellness. Countless foods and folk remedies are touted for this purpose. Yet beyond these, exercise offers even greater health benefits for kidney health and deserves wider adoption. Below, we introduce several exercise methods for men to support kidney vitality.
Two Methods for Waist Massage Exercises
The waist is the residence of the kidneys. Regularly massaging the waist area can prevent and treat chronic muscle strain, lower back pain, and other ailments caused by kidney deficiency in middle-aged and elderly individuals.Perform once in the morning and once in the evening, approximately 200 times each session. This exercise nourishes the kidneys and anchors vital energy.
2. Make fists with both hands. Extend arms backward and use the knuckles of both thumbs to naturally massage the waist area. Perform inward circular rotations, gradually increasing pressure until a sensation of soreness and fullness is felt. Continue for about 10 minutes, once in the morning, afternoon, and evening.
Sole Massage Method
Traditional Chinese medicine holds that the Yongquan acupoint directly connects to the kidney meridian and is where impure qi descends. Regularly massaging this point nourishes essence, strengthens the kidneys, promotes health, prevents premature aging, soothes the liver, improves vision, and aids sleep. It also offers therapeutic effects for kidney deficiency-related symptoms like dizziness, insomnia, tinnitus, hemoptysis, nasal congestion, and headaches.Foot sole massage method: Before bed each night, soak feet in warm water. Rub hands together until warm, then use the left palm to massage the right foot sole and the right palm to massage the left foot sole. Perform over 100 strokes each time, aiming to warm both feet through friction. This method strengthens the kidneys, nourishes yin, and reduces internal heat, proving highly effective for common deficiency-heat conditions in middle-aged and elderly individuals.
Kidney-Nourishing Fitness Exercises
1. Sit upright with legs naturally apart, shoulder-width apart. Bend elbows and raise arms sideways, fingers pointing upward, level with ears. Then raise both hands upward until a slight stretch is felt in the sides, then return to starting position. Perform 3 to 5 repetitions per set, doing 3 to 5 sets daily as appropriate. Before beginning, relax the entire body. Inhale while raising the arms, exhale while lowering them, avoiding excessive force or sudden movements. This exercise mobilizes joints, unblocks meridians, and directs qi to the lower abdomen, providing relief for the elderly, the frail, and those with shortness of breath.
2. Sit upright with the left arm bent and resting on the thighs. Bend the right arm, palm facing upward, and perform a throwing motion 3 to 5 times. When throwing the arm upward, the motion may be slightly faster. Inhale as the arm is thrown upward and exhale as it returns. This exercise serves the same purpose as the first. 3. Sit upright with legs hanging naturally. First, slowly rotate the torso left and right 3 to 5 times. Then swing both feet forward more than 10 times, adjusting the number based on personal stamina.Maintain full body relaxation throughout, ensuring movements are natural and gentle. Keep the torso upright during rotations; avoid leaning forward or backward. This exercise mobilizes the waist and knees, benefits the kidneys, and strengthens the lower back. Regular practice fortifies the waist and knees while supporting kidney health. 4. Sit upright, loosen your belt, and unbutton your clothing. Rub your hands together until warm, then place them on your waist. Rub your hands up and down your waist until warmth is felt. This method warms the kidneys and strengthens the waist. The waist area contains acupoints such as the Mingmen point on the Governor Vessel, and the Kidney Shu, Qi Sea Shu, and Large Intestine Shu points on the Bladder Meridian. After rubbing, a sensation of warmth throughout the body occurs, achieving effects of warming the kidneys, strengthening the waist, relaxing tendons, and promoting blood circulation.5. Stand with feet together, raise hands crossed overhead, then bend forward to touch the ground with palms. Squat down, hug knees with hands, and silently chant "blow" without vocalizing. Repeat this sequence over ten times. Regular practice of these exercises nourishes the kidneys, secures essence, strengthens the waist and knees, and unblocks meridians.
