Observations show that after a mother cries, her heart rate accelerates. While this mirrors the diaphragmatic oscillation state, fetal activity exhibits dramatic differences. Extensive knowledge has now been gained regarding the complex neurohormonal pathways connecting mother and fetus.
Physiologically, mother and fetus share not only a single brain and autonomic nervous system but also possess distinct nervous systems and circulatory functions. These neurohormonal pathways serve as a unique and invaluable means of emotional communication between mother and fetus, playing an exceptionally vital role.
While the brain undoubtedly commands behavior and thought, these processes occur within the cerebral cortex—the brain's outer layer.Notably, sensations and thoughts processed in the brain are transformed into emotions within the hypothalamus—a region directly connected to the cerebral cortex—and subsequently converted into bodily sensations.
It remains unclear under what conditions the fetal nervous system is most susceptible to residual neurohormones released during maternal stress responses, nor have the changes induced by these neurohormones been fully elucidated.However, recent research indicates that the fetal hypothalamus, along with the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems it regulates, are most susceptible to such influences. The mechanisms underlying fetal perception of maternal emotions remain poorly understood and require further scientific investigation, yet this phenomenon has already captured significant attention and interest among experts.
