Radiant and healthy complexion is what we all strive for, yet many friends in daily life suffer from dull, lackluster skin. So how can we achieve beauty and nourish our complexion? There are numerous methods for beauty and skin care, and today we introduce facial gua sha therapy.Facial gua sha therapy is an innovative skincare technique derived from the principles of gua sha for treating illnesses. It utilizes a specialized facial gua sha board designed according to the physiological structure of the face, applying specific techniques along designated meridians and acupoints.
Gua Sha for Skin Rejuvenation
Stimulating facial skin directly activates epidermal nerve endings, enhancing their conduction function and improving microcirculation. This delivers ample oxygen and nutrients to cells, activating them and boosting the regenerative capacity of elastic and fibroblast cells in the dermis. The result is plump, resilient muscles, moisturized skin, and reduced wrinkles—achieving the goal of beautifying and nourishing the complexion.
Facial gua sha slows cellular aging, leaving skin radiant and refined while fading spots and wrinkles. It also treats various facial skin conditions and indirectly regulates organ function. Eight meridians traverse the face; regular scraping stimulates these pathways and acupoints to harmonize corresponding organs, promoting qi and blood circulation.
Although gua sha involves bleeding, blood vessels remain intact. The technique merely expands intercellular spaces through pressure, allowing stagnant blood, pathological substances, and toxins to migrate from vessels to surrounding tissues. Bleeding is minimal, and the color of the "sha" marks varies based on the affected area and severity of the condition. After the marks appear, original pain diminishes or disappears, and vessel walls quickly return to normal once scraping ceases. The "sha" marks appearing on different body areas during gua sha represent blood that has leaked out of the blood vessels, existing between tissues and beneath the skin as extravasated blood.
Precautions After Facial Gua Sha
Before performing facial gua sha, it is essential to thoroughly understand the precautions involved. The key to facial gua sha lies in mastering the meridian points and the techniques of tonification and dispersion. Six meridians traverse the face, densely populated with acupoints, making it difficult for those without traditional Chinese medicine training to grasp these nuances.Additionally, the technique applied during facial gua sha is crucial. Excessive force may cause petechiae similar to those seen on the back, or even skin damage, compromising cosmetic results. Conversely, too light a touch fails to achieve the desired effect. These are key considerations for facial gua sha practitioners. Furthermore, since each individual's physical condition varies—some requiring tonification while others not—the appropriate technique must be tailored accordingly.
For skin conditions where lesions are dry, non-inflammatory, and free of exudate or ulceration (such as neurodermatitis, vitiligo, psoriasis, etc.), scraping can be applied directly to the affected areas. Similarly, non-painful benign nodules on the skin or subcutaneous tissue may also be scraped directly. However, areas with purulent inflammation, exudation, ulceration, or acute inflammatory symptoms like redness, swelling, heat, and pain (e.g., eczema, herpes, boils, carbuncles, abscesses, sores) should not be scraped directly. Instead, scrape the surrounding areas.
