Seven Major Hazards of Lipstick to Human Health
1. Lipstick primarily consists of lanolin, waxes, and dyes. Due to lanolin's complex composition, it can easily trigger allergic reactions such as dry, cracked, or peeling lip mucosa, sometimes accompanied by itching or mild pain.
2. The lanolin in lipstick has strong adsorbent properties, trapping airborne dust, bacteria, viruses, and heavy metal ions onto the lip mucosa. When drinking or eating, these harmful substances are ingested along with the lipstick, entering the body directly.
3. Coal tar dyes used in all lipsticks are potent carcinogens. Their concentration in lipstick far exceeds permissible levels in food. After applying lipstick, licking it off while speaking, drinking tea, or eating inevitably introduces it into the body.
4. Data indicates that 18.2% of cancer cases among young women are linked to lipstick use. Lipsticks contain high levels of heavy metals like lead and cadmium. Lead is cumulative; prolonged exposure may cause chronic lead poisoning, leading to anemia, abdominal pain, acute kidney failure, and neurological disorders.
5. Preservatives and antioxidants like BHA have been classified as probable carcinogens. For instance, parabens may contribute to breast tumors.
6. Artificial dyes in lipstick can transform into mutagens under UV exposure, potentially causing cancer.
7. Sweet-tasting lipsticks containing saccharin have been proven to cause cancer when ingested in excessive amounts.
Certain lipstick ingredients may pose health risks, so be mindful before application. Crucially, if you experience mild itching or unusual sensations, wash your lips and temporarily stop using lipstick.
