Straight, dry eyebrow tips may indicate menstrual irregularities in females or neurological disorders in males. In children or malnourished patients, yellowish, withered eyebrows signify lung qi deficiency.
Brow Ptosis:
Primarily caused by facial nerve paralysis. Unilateral brow drooping indicates paralysis on that side, preventing upward elevation. In some cases, unilateral ptosis of the upper eyelid (e.g., myasthenia gravis) may make the corresponding brow appear higher.
Thick eyebrows:
Individuals with thick eyebrows generally possess robust constitutions and abundant energy. However, exceptionally thick and dark eyebrows in women may be associated with hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex. Those with coarse, short eyebrows often exhibit impatience and irritability, necessitating vigilance against acute conditions.
Eyebrow loss:
Thin, sparse, or easily falling eyebrows are often seen in individuals with deficient qi and blood, who are physically weak and prone to illness. Such patients commonly experience cold hands and feet, along with weak kidney qi. Patients with hypothyroidism or anterior pituitary insufficiency frequently lose eyebrow hair, particularly in the outer third of the eyebrow. In the early stages of leprosy, thickening of the skin at the outer edge of the eyebrows may occur, leading to eyebrow loss. Alopecia areata patients may also experience simultaneous eyebrow loss. Cancer, syphilis, and severe anemia can also cause eyebrow loss, and some anticancer or antimetabolite drugs may have this side effect.
Eyebrow tilting downward:
Indicates a serious illness, particularly severe pathology of the gallbladder.
