What Are the Water Intake Precautions for Urinary Tract Stones?

For urinary tract stones, a crucial and simple treatment measure is to drink as much water as possible. Regardless of the stone type, increasing fluid intake facilitates stone passage and reduces recurrence rates after stone removal.
When drinking water, observe these principles:
1. Volume: Daily intake should exceed 2000ml to prevent recurrence. For primary expulsion, 4000ml daily yields optimal results.
2. Quality: Water quality may influence stone formation.Previously, it was believed that higher water hardness increased stone formation risk. However, current global research suggests the opposite: increased water hardness means more minerals, which can bind calcium to form insoluble compounds, reducing its absorption in the intestines. Water rich in trace elements like magnesium acts as an effective stone inhibitor.
3. Timing of water intake: To better prevent and treat stones, pay attention to when you drink water.Research generally indicates that stones are more likely to form at night. Increasing fluid intake during the night can be beneficial. Typically, drinking over 500ml before bedtime yields favorable preventive effects. During the day, fluid intake should be evenly distributed. Frequent urination throughout the day helps flush the urinary tract, promptly eliminating newly formed micro-stones, calcium ions, uric acid, and other substances conducive to stone formation, thereby preventing stones.Within 1-2 hours after meals, when absorption peaks and large amounts of metabolic waste are filtered by the kidneys, increasing water intake helps flush out these waste products, aiding in stone prevention. 4. Daily Water Selection: Regular boiled water is sufficient; mineral water is also acceptable, with no special requirements.
1. Prevention of Calcium-Containing Urinary Stones
(1) Increase fluid intake: Consume 2.5–3.0 liters of fluids daily to maintain a daily urine output of 2.0–2.5 liters.
(2) Dietary adjustments: Maintain overall nutritional balance and avoid excessive intake of any single nutrient.
(3) Dietary calcium content: Consume a diet with normal calcium levels while limiting animal protein and sodium intake. A diet within the normal range or moderately high in calcium holds clinical therapeutic value for preventing recurrence of calcium-containing urinary stones.
(4) Limit dietary oxalate intake: Patients with calcium oxalate stones should avoid foods such as radishes, amaranth, celery,lettuce, bamboo shoots, potatoes, soy products, cocoa, chocolate, black tea, pickled plums, cola, beer, cabbage, almonds, peanuts, beets, parsley, spinach, and rhubarb. Spinach has the highest oxalate content, so patients with calcium oxalate stones should be especially careful to avoid it.
(5) Limit sodium intake: Daily sodium consumption should be less than 2 grams.
(6) Limit excessive protein intake: Daily animal protein intake should be restricted to under 150 grams. Patients with recurrent stones should not exceed 80 grams of protein per day.
(7) Maintain a healthy weight: Urinary stone patients should keep their Body Mass Index (BMI) between 11 and 18.
(8) Increase fruit and vegetable intake: Boosting consumption of fruits and vegetables can prevent stone recurrence in patients with hypocitraturia.
(9) Increase whole grain and fiber intake: Rice bran can reduce urinary calcium excretion and lower urinary stone recurrence rates, but avoid fiber-rich foods high in oxalate, such as wheat bran.
(10) Reduce vitamin C intake: Vitamin C naturally converts to oxalate. Daily vitamin C intake should not exceed 1.0 grams. Limit consumption of citrus fruits, lemons, tomatoes, strawberries, etc.
(11) Limit high-purine foods: Patients with calcium oxalate stones accompanied by hyperuricosuria should avoid high-purine diets. Foods rich in purines include: animal offal (liver and kidneys), poultry skin, herring with skin, sardines, anchovies, etc.
