Daily 20-Minute Walks Help Prevent Dementia
According to a July 13 report in the UK's Daily Mail, a new study found that walking for 20 minutes at least three times a week can significantly reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (senile dementia).
Scientists at the University of Cambridge conducted a comprehensive analysis of 30 studies and found that among individuals over 65, dementia (classified into Alzheimer's, vascular dementia, mixed dementia, and other types) affects one-third of the population. Alzheimer's is the most prevalent form, with lifestyle factors—such as lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, hypertension, and low educational attainment—accounting for one-third of cases. Among these, physical inactivity is the most significant contributing factor.Statistics indicate that 22% of Alzheimer's cases stem from insufficient physical activity in older adults—twice the rate of other contributing factors.
