Is eating late-night snacks a good habit?

1. The peak period for calcium excretion typically occurs 4–5 hours after a meal. If you eat late at night, by the time this peak arrives, you're already asleep. Urine then accumulates in the urinary tract—ureter, bladder, urethra—and isn't expelled promptly. This causes calcium levels in urine to rise continuously, making it easier for crystals to form. Over time, these crystals grow larger and larger, eventually forming stones.
2. Late-night snacks are often substantial meals. While nutritionally rich, they raise another issue: how nutrients are utilized.Scientific studies indicate that late-night meals often include large amounts of high-protein foods like meat, eggs, and dairy. This increases urinary calcium levels, which on one hand reduces calcium storage in the body—potentially triggering rickets in children, myopia in adolescents, and osteoporosis in middle-aged and elderly individuals. On the other hand, high urinary calcium concentration significantly raises the risk of developing urinary tract stones.
Moreover, excessive protein intake that the body cannot absorb remains in the intestines, where it decomposes into toxins like ammonia, indole, and hydrogen sulfide. These substances irritate the intestinal lining and may contribute to cancer development. Combined with alcohol consumption, this increases the risk of developing alcoholic fatty liver disease.
3. Frequent late-night snacking, especially on high-fat, high-protein foods, can cause sudden spikes in blood lipid levels. When blood consistently maintains high fat levels overnight, excessive or frequent late-night eating significantly increases the liver's synthesis of blood cholesterol and stimulates it to produce more low-density lipoproteins. These transport excess cholesterol to arterial walls (including penile arteries), contributing to atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and erectile dysfunction.
Simultaneously, consistently overeating late-night meals repeatedly stimulates the pancreas, increasing insulin secretion. Over time, this causes beta cells responsible for insulin production to deteriorate or even prematurely decline, leading to diabetes. These conditions can all impair sexual function and cause sexual decline.
4. Overeating at night can cause stomach distension, exerting pressure on surrounding organs. The intense post-meal activity of organs like the stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas sends signals to the brain, stimulating brain activity that spreads to other parts of the cerebral cortex and induces insomnia.
Therefore, the best approach to maintaining health is to avoid or minimize late-night snacks. If nutritional supplementation is necessary at night, carbohydrates—specifically starches and sugars—are the optimal choice. These foods indirectly enhance brain chemistry by stimulating insulin secretion, thereby promoting relaxation and calmness, which is particularly beneficial for insomniacs.
