As we age, our entire body undergoes changes, including our feet. Whether walking, wearing high heels for work, or jogging in our free time, significant pressure is placed on our foot muscles. Regular foot stretching helps alleviate pain and reduce strain. Recently, the American Council on Exercise recommended three daily foot stretches to keep feet healthy and strong.
Exercise 1: Stand upright with one leg extended behind you. Slowly lower your body while keeping the front heel grounded. Place both hands on the outer side of the front thigh and press downward. Repeat on the other side. Perform three repetitions per side. For a deeper stretch, slightly lift your hips, straighten the front leg, then press down again. This stretch targets the hip flexors in the back leg, hamstrings in the front leg, and gluteal muscles.
Exercise 2: Spread your toes apart like fingers, then curl them back in. Repeat 8–10 times, 2–3 times daily. This movement allows certain intrinsic foot muscles to shift between the metatarsals, strengthening the muscles between the toes. It helps prevent toe contractures or hammertoe formation and slows their progression.
Exercise 3: Sit on the bed with the middle section of a resistance band or towel placed under one foot. Keep knees slightly bent and back straight, then gently pull upward until you feel a stretch in the back of your calf. Hold for 20 seconds, then repeat on the other side. This exercise relieves leg and foot stiffness and is especially suitable before getting out of bed.
Women who frequently wear high heels may add these exercises: 1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart; slowly raise heels, then lower them back to the ground. Perform 3 sets of 20 repetitions each.2. Place a towel on the floor and grasp it with the toes of one foot. Hold for 30 seconds before releasing. Repeat on the other side. Perform 3 sets daily. These exercises effectively relieve foot pain and reduce strain. Additionally, soaking feet in warm water for 15 minutes daily can help reduce inflammation.
