Small gestures of thoughtfulness and care can strengthen marital bonds
We often hear friends complain that they contribute far more than their partners in maintaining their marriage and family. Is this truly the case? Dr. Bao Leiping, Associate Researcher at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Family Studies, told Life Times that this is a common mindset."People tend to remember their own contributions and efforts vividly, yet overlook their partner's sacrifices or fail to acknowledge their efforts. Women, in particular, are more prone to 'amplify' their own contributions, believing they do more in the marriage than their husbands."
This cognitive imbalance negatively impacts the marriage. However, changing this state is not difficult. The key lies in "balancing" the amount of contribution, mutual understanding, and care—especially husbands should do more for their wives. Dr. Scott Stanley, Director of the Marriage and Family Research Center at the University of Denver, found that devotion is the secret to maintaining a marital relationship. He believes that as long as spouses are willing to devote themselves to each other, there will be positive and significant effects. For instance, a husband could create a "dedication" plan: list things he knows his partner enjoys on paper and accomplish one each week. Dr. Stanley emphasizes that dedication is mutual—when you do something for your partner weekly, you inevitably receive a response in return, creating a virtuous cycle. This prevents feelings of imbalance or resentment over perceived unequal effort. In fact, she may become more willing to do many things for you.
Bao Leiping explains that human behavior is interactive, especially between two people in love. While some partners may be more reserved and not immediately give enthusiastic responses, they will be touched and motivated. Over time, this fosters a positive dynamic of mutual care and giving between spouses.
Bao Leiping points out that doing something for your partner each week doesn't need to be overly deliberate or require significant expense or effort.Unobtrusive thoughtfulness, even the smallest gestures, gradually builds warmth between spouses. For instance, if the wife works hard every day, the husband could prepare breakfast before she wakes up on weekends. If rain is forecast for the next day, the wife might place an umbrella next to her husband's briefcase the night before.
