During the late Sui and early Tang dynasties, a renowned physician named Zhen Quan was hailed as a master of acupuncture and moxibustion. Legend recounts that a provincial governor, incapacitated by wind-cold, could no longer draw his bow. After consulting numerous physicians without success, he sought Zhen Quan. The physician declared:"Maintain your archery stance, and with one needle, I'll restore your ability to shoot." The governor assumed the posture, and Zhen Quan inserted a needle into his shoulder point. Instantly, the governor could shoot again. Like this governor, shoulder ailments are increasingly common today. Some elderly individuals suffer so severely they struggle to dress themselves, unable even to lift their shoulders upon waking. For shoulder periarthritis caused by cold exposure, chronic computer use leading to shoulder soreness and stiffness, or impaired upper limb mobility in hemiplegic patients, massaging the Jianyu acupoint offers significant relief. When you raise your shoulder, trace upward along the collarbone until you feel a raised point—this is the acromion. Just below and in front of it lies a slight depression: the Jianyu acupoint. The best way to massage this point is to lie on your back, relax your shoulder, and have someone gently knead it for 3–5 minutes.Self-massage is also feasible: place your right hand on your left shoulder with fingers spread wide, grasping the shoulder firmly. Press your palm tightly against the muscle and use your thumb for circular massage while the other four fingers perform a pinching and lifting motion. For more severe cases, use a prop like a wall or tree trunk. Press your shoulder firmly against it and rotate your shoulder around this axis while massaging.
Additionally, maintain warmth daily, avoid heavy lifting, engage in moderate joint exercises, and ensure adequate calcium intake. Physical therapies like heat packs or cupping may also accelerate recovery.
