Can rhinoplasty materials cause pathological changes? This is a common concern among patients considering rhinoplasty. Nasal plastic surgery experts indicate that the materials currently used are medical-grade polymer silicone, which is highly suitable for serving as a nasal bridge scaffold.
Silicone has been used as a rhinoplasty material for over 20 years. Long-term clinical application demonstrates its stable properties—it does not cause cancer or deform when retained in human tissue over extended periods. Clinically, many individuals who underwent rhinoplasty over a decade ago show no adverse reactions or deformities post-surgery.
Research indicates silicone possesses two key properties: hydrophobicity and lipophilicity. Within 2-3 months of implantation, its hydrophobicity fully dissipates while lipophilicity increases. Some may wonder how many years it takes for silicone in implants to age and harden. A key factor ensuring silicone implants maintain their shape after nasal augmentation is their non-adherent nature with surrounding tissues. This means silicone rubber never fuses with human tissue. However, repeated intense external force may widen this gap or even cause inflammation and suppuration.
