A few days ago, I ran into an old classmate I hadn't seen in ages. I noticed a large bruise on her nose and assumed she'd been hit. But after asking more questions, I learned she'd actually undergone rhinoplasty. The bruising around her nose hadn't faded for a long time, which was quite distressing for her.Regarding this, I specifically consulted a plastic surgery expert, who responded as follows...
Is bruising normal after rhinoplasty?
Swelling and bruising are common side effects during the recovery period after rhinoplasty and represent normal surgical reactions.During the procedure, some tissue is inevitably cut, severing capillaries and lymphatic vessels. This causes fluid to accumulate under the skin, leading to swelling and bruising. The severity and duration vary from person to person, largely depending on the surgical site, incision type (open or closed), nasal skin thickness, post-operative care, and individual healing capacity.
Preventing Bruising: Preoperative Preparations
Avoid taking any anticoagulant medications at least two weeks prior to surgery, including: aspirin, ibuprofen, anti-inflammatory drugs, sodium heparin, enoxaparin, warfarin, and clopidogrel. Resume these medications only under your doctor's guidance after surgery.Additionally, avoid multivitamin supplements or herbal teas containing high levels of vitamin E, ginseng, or ginkgo biloba (these may increase bleeding tendency). If you have a bleeding disorder or a family history of bleeding disorders, inform your doctor promptly before surgery.
How to Help Bruising Heal Post-Surgery
Apply ice packs to the cheeks or eyes for the first 48 hours after surgery. Keep your head elevated above heart level to help reduce swelling. Applying herbal preparations such as bromelain, papaya extract, and arnica montana in appropriate amounts can also be beneficial for reducing swelling and bruising.
Daily Precautions
Sun exposure during the initial days post-surgery may cause redness or discoloration on the nasal skin and increase the risk of sunburn in the treated area. Therefore, for the first few months after surgery, apply sunscreen or wear protective clothing and hats before going outdoors.Avoid bending over, lifting heavy objects, exercising, or any activities that increase blood pressure for several weeks after surgery, as these can exacerbate swelling and bruising. Ensure adequate sleep and engage in moderate, simple outdoor walks.
How Long Does Bruising Last After Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a meticulously detailed facial procedure. Postoperative swelling typically persists for about 3 months, with full recovery taking approximately one year. Report any unusual healing signs promptly to your surgeon for appropriate management.Swelling and bruising are common complications after rhinoplasty, so patients need not be overly concerned. With diligent post-operative care and a positive mindset, swelling and bruising will gradually subside.
