Although rhinoplasty techniques are well-established, improper postoperative care remains risky. Selecting a reputable hospital and experienced surgeon is crucial preoperatively, while postoperative self-care is paramount. Below are key care methods and precautions for the first week after rhinoplasty. Postoperative Day 1 Patients should rest in a semi-recumbent position to promote blood circulation and avoid lowering the head to prevent bleeding.A small amount of bloody fluid may drain from the incision inside the nostrils. Gently wipe it away with sterile cotton swabs. Never touch the wound with unsterilized items to avoid contamination. Mild swelling and tenderness at the nasal tip and bridge, along with swelling in the mid-face area, are normal reactions. Patients should remain calm, get adequate rest, and avoid excessive worry.
2–3 Days Post-Surgery
Blood crusts forming at the incision site can be gently washed away with hydrogen peroxide within 48 hours post-surgery. Follow with a saline rinse, apply a small amount of ointment, or sprinkle anti-inflammatory powder to keep the wound dry and allow it to heal naturally. Nasal and facial pain should have largely subsided by this stage, though swelling will become increasingly noticeable, obscuring the external nasal contour. The swollen face may appear quite unsightly, but this is a normal reaction and an inevitable part of the recovery process. Patients should patiently wait for the swelling to subside and avoid attempting to reduce it with hot compresses, as this can hinder healing. Maintain cleanliness of the nose and face, avoid touching the nose with hands, and prevent any external impact to the nose.
Days 3–6 Post-Op
With abundant facial blood circulation, swelling is pronounced post-trauma but subsides rapidly. As swelling recedes, bruising around the eyes gradually shifts from red to yellow. Discomfort persists around the nasal tip and bridge. Any conjunctival bruising typically resolves during this phase.Patients should avoid prolonged bed rest or sitting and may engage in light activities while maintaining a positive mindset.
7 days post-op
Swelling has largely subsided, and facial bruising has resolved. However, the nasal contour may appear less natural, with the nasal bridge and tip exhibiting a shiny appearance. Wounds are fully healed with no residual pain. Patients must attend scheduled hospital appointments for suture removal and follow-up photography.
How Long Until Normal Recovery?
Most rhinoplasty patients can walk on the second day post-op and resume studies within one week. With the above diligent care, the nose typically appears relatively natural around 10 days. However, slower recovery cases may take approximately 2-3 weeks to fully resemble a normal nose.
