Below are specific post-operative care methods for implant-based breast augmentation:
1. A simple dressing will cover the surgical incisions, with a bandage securing the breast position. Showering is permitted after a follow-up examination with your surgeon two to three days post-op. Additional follow-ups are scheduled at one week, one month, and six months. Surgical sutures will dissolve automatically within ten days.
2. During the first month post-surgery, wear either a well-fitting, soft bra or a positioning bra as directed by your doctor. Alternatively, you may choose not to wear a bra to allow the breast tissue to naturally settle into shape. Initially, the breasts may feel swollen and firm. After one to two months, the texture and shape will become more natural. Full recovery occurs when you mentally integrate the implants as part of your body and no longer notice their presence.
3. Avoid wearing underwire bras for six months post-surgery to prevent breast deformation and capsular contracture (fibrous hardening of the capsule).
4. Begin breast massage one week after surgery. Gently push the breasts upward, inward, and outward, holding each position for ten seconds. Perform this for five minutes on each breast. Do this twice daily for the first month. Starting the second month, continue once nightly for one year. After one year, massage may be performed at irregular intervals. Breast massage helps loosen the fibrous tissue surrounding the implant, effectively reducing the risk of capsular contracture. Consistent practice is essential.
5. Additionally, taking 800 units of Vitamin E daily (400 units morning and evening) for six consecutive months after breast augmentation surgery helps prevent capsular tissue hardening and contracture.
6. Scar tissue at the incision site may exhibit hardening, raised appearance, and redness during the first three months post-surgery—these are normal physiological phenomena. However, most scars will fade and become barely noticeable after approximately six months.
7. For slender women with thin breast tissue, the edges of subcutaneous implants may be slightly palpable, particularly in the lower and outer breast areas. Choosing silicone implants and placing them under the pectoral muscle can reduce but not entirely eliminate this issue.
8. Post-surgery breast pain and bruising vary by individual, depending on surgical technique, implant type, and personal constitution. Pain typically subsides within two to three days and can be managed with prescribed medication. Bruising generally resolves within one to two weeks.
9. After resting for two to three days, daily activities can generally resume two to three days post-surgery. Returning to work is typically possible five to seven days after the procedure. Avoid raising arms overhead or carrying heavy objects during the first week. Steam baths and swimming should be avoided for two weeks. Vigorous exercise should be postponed until two weeks after surgery.
