Can Breast Augmentation Correct Sagging Breasts? Women experiencing varying degrees of breast sagging often turn to breast augmentation, hoping to reshape their breasts and correct drooping. So, how should one choose a treatment for breast sagging?
Can breast augmentation correct breast ptosis? Breast ptosis is a physiological phenomenon commonly seen in middle-aged and elderly women who have experienced pregnancy and breastfeeding. It occurs when glandular and connective tissue proliferation causes breast enlargement, followed by subsequent atrophy. The skin and suspensory structures, stretched and expanded during breast enlargement, lose elasticity. For typical breast ptosis, breast augmentation can often provide a solution. However, severe ptosis or ptosis associated with macromastia cannot be effectively addressed through augmentation alone.
Breast ptosis is classified into three degrees based on severity:
Grade I: Breasts sag, with nipples parallel to the inframammary fold.Grade II: Nipples positioned below the inframammary fold but above the lowest point of the breast. Grade III: Nipples located at the lowest point of the breast. However, in some cases of breast ptosis—particularly those with hypertrophy in the distal breast—the nipples may not reach the lowest point despite significant ptosis. Such cases should also be classified as Grade III ptosis.
Can breast augmentation correct breast ptosis? Multiple surgical approaches exist for ptosis correction, including: breast augmentation, isolated mastopexy, mastopexy with reduction mammoplasty, mastopexy with augmentation, subcutaneous mastectomy, and nipple-areolar complex elevation with augmentation. The choice of surgical approach for breast ptosis correction depends on the cause of ptosis, the patient's height, weight, body type, degree of obesity, and severity of ptosis. Breast augmentation is only suitable for women with mild ptosis. For severe ptosis or ptosis in cases of macromastia, relying solely on breast augmentation for correction is inadvisable. This is because breast augmentation cannot lift and secure breast tissue and skin; it merely increases breast volume, temporarily improving skin tension.
