Accurate Location and Functions of Banmen
Located on the thenar eminence of the child's palm, Banmen (PC1) strengthens the spleen and stomach, aids digestion, and alleviates nausea and vomiting. It primarily treats digestive symptoms like indigestion, abdominal distension, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, and belching. Clinically, it's often used for milk retention, poor appetite, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Causes of Purple-Blue Discoloration at Banmen in Children
As Banmen is situated on the thenar eminence, where the Lung Meridian of the Hand-Taiyin passes through, its purple-blue hue indicates cold, stasis, and fright. Such discoloration in children typically suggests spleen-stomach deficiency-cold or lung cold, possibly resulting from insufficient yang qi and internal cold-dampness.

Kneading method: The practitioner holds the child's fingers with the left hand. Using the right thumb dipped in talcum powder, press and knead the Banmen point. Kneading can be performed in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
Stroking Technique: The practitioner holds the child's fingers with the left hand. Using the right thumb, stroke from the base of the thumb toward the wrist crease, or from the wrist crease toward the base of the thumb. Alternate strokes in both directions.
Functions and Benefits of Banmen Massage
Banmen massage includes clearing and kneading techniques. Kneading is gentler, primarily regulating symptoms like poor appetite, anorexia, belching, and indigestion.Clearing Banmen, however, has a cooling nature and belongs to the purging method. It clears damp-heat from the middle jiao spleen and stomach, harmonizing the stomach, descending counterflow, and purging stomach fire. Pushing from the base of the thumb toward the wrist crease can stop diarrhea, while pushing from the wrist crease toward the base of the thumb can stop vomiting.
Are the thenar eminence and Banmen the same?
The thenar eminence refers to the prominent, muscular area on the palm's surface extending from the base of the thumb to the palm's root. This region is rich in muscle and occupies a significant portion of the palm. The Banmen acupoint is located within the thenar eminence—a term specific to Traditional Chinese Medicine—and should not be equated with the thenar eminence itself.
