Most of us have experienced a stiff neck at some point. When you wake up in the morning with a sore, stiff neck, what should you do? Below are several effective methods to relieve and treat a stiff neck. If you're suffering from one, give them a try.
1. Apply a hot towel or heating pad to your neck or the back of your head. The warmth promotes blood circulation in the area, which is highly effective for relieving stiff neck.Ensure movements are slow and controlled to avoid worsening the condition.
3. Neck massage can also provide relief. Before massaging, rub your hands together to warm them. Then gently massage the painful area. Avoid applying excessive pressure; simply knead lightly for a few minutes until the area feels warm.
4. Neck extension and retraction can relieve stiff neck. This exercise can be done sitting or standing. First, gently extend your head upward, being careful not to strain. Pause briefly at the maximum extension, then retract your neck downward. Repeating this 30 times helps prevent muscle adhesion in the neck and alleviates stiffness.Simultaneously shrug both shoulders upward, or rotate them forward, backward, up, and down. After shrugging for a few minutes, gently tap both shoulders. This helps reduce muscle tension in the neck area and is highly effective for resolving stiff neck issues.
6. Apply topical remedies: Gently rub pain-relieving ointments like Honghua Oil, Rheumatism Oil, or Yunxiang Essence onto the painful areas. Apply several times daily for gradual improvement.
7. Auricular Acupuncture: Requires assistance. Insert needles into the neck and occipital ear points. Press these points with the index finger tip for 5–10 minutes, or massage them with the fingertip.
8. Pain-relieving patches: Apply patches like Shangshi Zhitong Gao (Wetness-Relieving Pain Relief Plaster) or Pengxiang Zhitong Yin (Pain-Relieving and Relaxing Plaster) to the painful neck area. Change daily for noticeable pain relief. Note: Patches may restrict neck movement; pregnant women should avoid this method.
9. Vinegar Compress: Heat 100 grams of cooking vinegar to 50-70°C (122-154°F). Apply the warm vinegar to gauze and compress the painful area. Use multiple gauze pads in rotation. While applying the compress, gently move the neck. Each session lasts 20 minutes, repeated 2-3 times daily. Recovery typically occurs within 2 days.
Friendly Reminder: The morning sets the tone for the day. As the time when energy is highest, waking up with a stiff neck can be unpleasant and disrupt daily work or studies. Therefore, seek prompt treatment for a stiff neck. In addition to the above 9 methods, some Chinese patent medicines can also be effective.
