Many people peel radishes before eating, discarding the skin and using only the flesh. Little do they know that radish skin actually holds higher nutritional value than the flesh itself. Radish skin contains roughly twice the vitamin C found in the flesh, and 98% of the calcium in radishes is concentrated in the skin. So what nutrients does radish skin provide?
Radish skin is rich in dietary fiber, which promotes intestinal motility and helps prevent constipation.
The pungent radish skin contains significant amounts of isothiocyanates, which are key components responsible for radish's cancer-preventive properties.
Radish skin is rich in sulforaphane, one of the most health-promoting compounds in cruciferous vegetables. It boosts the immune system, activates liver detoxification enzymes, and protects skin from UV damage.
Polyphenols like flavonoids are typically concentrated in radish skin. They possess potent antioxidant properties that combat free radical damage, help prevent cardiovascular disease, and enhance overall immunity.
The nutritional value of white radish peel and carrot peel differs slightly. White radish peel primarily benefits the lungs, while carrot peel mainly supports the spleen and stomach.
White radish peel functions: Containing sinigrin, it reduces inflammation, kills bacteria, and helps regulate qi, dissolve phlegm, and suppress coughs. It treats wind-heat colds and reduces edema (pregnant women can also use it to reduce foot swelling; for edema reduction, radish peel must be consumed alone).
Benefits of carrot peel: Contains carotene (provitamin A), which promotes hemoglobin production, enhances blood concentration and quality, and is highly effective in treating anemia. Carrots are also rich in iron, aiding blood replenishment. Red carrots contain 40% more iron than white radishes and 75% more than green radishes.
With so many benefits, next time you eat radishes, don't peel off and discard the skin!
