Teenage girls, ever mindful of their appearance, find their fair, delicate skin marred by troublesome little red bumps. When squeezed, they release tiny pinkish debris—these are "pimples," colloquially called "beauty beans" or "youth pimples," medically known as acne vulgaris.
Acne is a common occurrence during adolescence. Healthy young men and women aged 13 to 23 may develop acne (more common in males than females), with some individuals experiencing it beyond age 30.During puberty, increased secretion of androgens stimulates vigorous sebaceous gland development. Simultaneously, keratinization occurs in the walls of the sebaceous follicle ducts, blocking the duct lumen and preventing sebum from being expelled. This leads to the formation of sebaceous plugs, which are also acne lesions. If bacterial infections such as staphylococcus occur, the acne becomes inflamed and reddened, potentially forming small pustules.Recurrent outbreaks may leave small brown scars on the face that are difficult to fade. If inflammation penetrates deep into the skin, pitted scars may remain after the inflammation subsides, affecting appearance. Acne does not typically leave facial scars unless complicated by infection. The condition fluctuates in severity, progresses slowly, and often persists into middle age before gradually improving and resolving.
The face has the highest concentration of sebaceous glands in the body, making it the primary site for acne, particularly on the forehead, cheeks, and neck. The chest and back are secondary sites, with lesions often appearing scattered and symmetrical. In severe cases, they may cluster densely.
(1) Maintain facial cleanliness: Wash face regularly with lukewarm water, as cold water fails to remove oils effectively while hot water stimulates sebum production. Avoid harsh soaps; sulfur-based soap may offer some benefit for acne. Refrain from using snow lotion or other oil-based cosmetics.
(2) Maintain a balanced diet: Increase intake of vegetables and fruits while reducing consumption of fatty, sugary, and spicy foods. Ensure regular bowel movements.
(3) Avoid squeezing pimples to prevent infection and inflammation. Burst pustules may lead to scarring and hyperpigmentation, affecting appearance. Antibiotics may be effective for severe infections.
(4) Treatment: Laser therapy for acne scars utilizes high-energy light to remove damaged skin tissue. This treatment reduces wrinkles and other skin imperfections. Laser therapy delivers significant, long-lasting results without complications.
(5) Balancing work and rest while maintaining a positive mindset greatly benefits acne treatment. Avoid psychological stress over acne, as it may trigger neuroendocrine disorders and worsen breakouts. If facial pimples seem minor, medication isn't always necessary—they often fade naturally without leaving marks. However, persistent picking or improper application of products may leave unsightly pitted scars. Those with severe acne should seek diagnosis and treatment at a dermatology clinic and avoid self-medication.
