Kidney yang deficiency resulting in scattered yang qi and blood stasis in the face, forming melasma.
2. Increased secretion of androgens and progesterone by the placenta during pregnancy. This commonly causes symmetrical melasma on the cheeks of pregnant women. However, after childbirth, when androgen and progesterone levels return to normal, most spots naturally fade or disappear.
3. Medication factors: 9%–20% of women taking oral contraceptives long-term are prone to melasma, with some developing facial spots as early as one month after starting. Additionally, medications for hypertension or diabetes, along with foods high in photosensitizing compounds (e.g., celery, coriander, carrots), may trigger melasma.
4. Other factors: Chronic conditions like hepatitis or tuberculosis can increase tyrosinase activity, boosting melanin production while reducing the body's ability to eliminate it. Accumulated melanin may eventually manifest as melasma on the face. Improper cosmetic use can also accelerate or worsen melasma development, contributing to various pigmentation issues.
Expert Tips: To effectively address pigmentation, first determine whether it is congenital or acquired. Congenital melanin often deposits deep within the skin layers, making it difficult to remove through skin exfoliation alone. Acquired pigmentation, however, can generally be managed more effectively by selecting appropriate skincare products.As we age, metabolism slows and self-renewal weakens, making spots increasingly stubborn to fade. Thus, establishing proper care in youth is paramount. Essential habits for effective spot reduction:
1. Strict sun protection.
2. Avoid heavy makeup.
3. Consume antioxidant-rich foods: Vitamin C (400mg/day), Vitamin E (200mg/day), green tea, OPCs, and collagen supplements.
4. Practice gentle massage and consistent hydration.
5. Use whitening products moderately.
6. Protect against radiation exposure.
7. Make exercise a habit.
