How to preserve roses in a flower shop:
1. Construct a sealed mini-cold storage unit in a corner of the room using foam boards, adhesive tape, etc. The size should accommodate your home refrigerator (freezer) while also fitting the roses to be stored (preferably with shelves) and allowing sufficient working space;
2.Install a thermometer and hygrometer inside the cold storage. Fully open or remove the refrigerator door, ensuring the compressor unit at the back is positioned outside the cold storage. Set the temperature to 5°C to 8°C. Place containers filled with potassium permanganate solution at various locations throughout the space.Upon receiving the roses, remove any unnecessary leaves, taking care not to damage the thorns. Place the prepared roses in a clean, non-metallic bucket filled with preservative solution for 4 to 12 hours.Remove them, pack into cardboard boxes, and store in a small cold storage unit;
4. If no refrigerator is available, use ice for cooling (less effective). In northern regions during winter, when temperatures are low, use heating methods like light bulbs to maintain temperatures between 1°C and 4°C. This cold storage unit can also be used as a greenhouse for forcing flowers.Throughout storage, monitor market conditions. Maintain storage during high prices; when prices stabilize or decline, rotate stock by selling cold-stored roses and replacing them with newly purchased ones. 5. Ventilate every two days. During the final three days, gradually raise the temperature by 1°C to 2°C daily. Following these steps allows roses to be stored for 15 to 20 days.Roses should be removed 2 to 3 days before sale. Place them at room temperature (20°C to 25°C) and use a flowering solution (preservative solution with 10g/L to 20g/L sucrose) for 24 to 48 hours, ensuring adequate light exposure.For rapid forcing, convert the cold storage into a greenhouse by raising the temperature to around 30°C using electric lamps. Simultaneously, use several aquarium heat sticks to maintain water temperature in a bucket between 30°C and 35°C, forcing blooms within 12 hours.
How to preserve roses in a vase:
Flame-sealing method
Hold the stem ends over a flame for 2–3 minutes until they turn brownish-yellow, then submerge in water. This method prevents bacterial colonization, promotes sap secretion and tissue healing, and does not affect water absorption, resulting in more vibrant blooms.
Blanching Method
Submerge the base of the stem in boiling water for about ten seconds. This seals the cut surface, preventing sap leakage from the stem tissue.
Deep Water Rescue Method
When flowers droop, trim a small section from the stem tip. Place the stem in a container filled with cold water, leaving only the flower head above the surface. After one to two hours, the stem will revive. This method works for both herbaceous and woody flowers.
Preservative Solution Method
Adding an appropriate amount of floral preservative to the vase extends the vase life. Additionally, a solution of 1 part ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to 3,000 parts water can be used.
The above outlines simple methods for preserving roses. We hope this information proves helpful.
