Reishi Mushroom Wellness: Cultivated Varieties Don't Compare to Wild Ones

Modern pharmacological research indicates that Ganoderma lucidum possesses a rich array of pharmacological components, with its active constituents categorized into ten major groups, including Ganoderma polysaccharides, ganoderic acids (triterpenoids), and amino acids. Ganoderma exerts bidirectional regulatory effects on the human body, addressing conditions across multiple systems such as cardiovascular, digestive, and endocrine. It demonstrates particularly significant efficacy in preventing and treating liver disorders, insomnia, and aging.Ganoderma lucidum protects against liver damage caused by various physicochemical and biological factors. Whether administered before or after liver injury occurs, it safeguards the liver and mitigates damage. It promotes the liver's metabolism of drugs and toxins, demonstrating definite efficacy against toxic hepatitis.Reports indicate that Ganoderma preparations (such as Ganoderma syrup) achieve a total effective rate of 73.1%–97.0% and a marked effective rate of 44.0%–76.5% in treating viral hepatitis. Its efficacy is primarily manifested in the alleviation or disappearance of subjective symptoms like fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal distension, and hepatic pain. Enlarged livers and spleens show varying degrees of reduction, and liver function improves(e.g., normalization or reduction of serum alanine aminotransferase levels). Thus, Ganoderma lucidum is applicable for treating chronic poisoning, various acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatic dysfunction. Currently, over 90 species of wild medicinal Ganoderma lucidum exist in China, with more than 20 commonly used for medicinal purposes. Key varieties include Ganoderma sinense (red reishi), Ganoderma tsutsugae (purple reishi), Ganoderma applanatum (thin-cap reishi), Ganoderma lucidum (tree tongue reishi), and Ganoderma lucidum var. sinense (cloud reishi).In recent years, excessive harvesting of wild Ganoderma has made collecting them increasingly difficult. On the other hand, the cultivated Ganoderma industry has seen significant growth.
So, what exactly are the differences between cultivated and wild Ganoderma? How do their effects compare? With these questions in mind, our reporter interviewed Professor Chen Kanglin, Director of the Wild Ganoderma Science Museum at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.
Professor Chen emphasized substantial differences, primarily in morphology. Cultivated Ganoderma mushrooms exhibit uniform size and regular shapes. Moreover, only limited species are suitable for cultivation, primarily Ganoderma lucidum (red reishi) and Ganoderma sinense (purple reishi). Cultivation cycles typically span 1–3 months; this shorter growth period results in softer mushroom surfaces.
Wild Ganoderma, exposed to natural elements like sun and rain, develops a warm, lustrous color. Its growth period ranges from several years to over a century, resulting in a high degree of lignification and exceptional hardness. Wild specimens vary greatly in size and shape. Additionally, while cultivated Ganoderma is treated with pesticides and rarely suffers insect damage, wild Ganoderma often bears irregular insect holes.
The two types also differ significantly in active compounds. The most valuable components—organic germanium and organic selenium—are entirely absent in cultivated Ganoderma.Each gram of wild Ganoderma lucidum contains 800–2000 micrograms of organic germanium and 1000–4000 micrograms of organic selenium. This represents 4–6 times the organic selenium content found in 20-year-old wild ginseng. Wild Ganoderma lucidum also contains 3–6 times the levels of Ganoderma polysaccharides and ganoderic acids compared to cultivated varieties.Furthermore, the levels of total triterpenoids and numerous trace elements in cultivated Ganoderma lucidum fall significantly short of those found in wild specimens.
For this reason, experts have long focused their research efforts on wild Ganoderma lucidum. Reporters learned that Professor Chen Kanglin once led his professional collection team deep into remote, untouched primeval forests, braving life-threatening conditions to gather wild medicinal fungi.Their footprints stretched south to the tropical rainforests of Wuzhishan in Hainan, north to Mohe in Heilongjiang, and west to Medog in Tibet. Over the past decade, they have collected more than 300 species of wild medicinal fungi, making outstanding contributions to the development of wild medicinal fungi.
