Amniotic fluid is actually the baby's urine
When discussing amniotic fluid, many "artsy types" bestow it with poetic names like "water of life" or "source of love." However, Chen Min, Director of the Fetal Medicine Center at Guangzhou Medical University Third Affiliated Hospital, explains that during mid-pregnancy, the primary source of amniotic fluid is the fetus's urine. In later stages, it also includes fluid secreted by the fetal lungs.By late pregnancy, the fetus can produce over 1,000 milliliters of urine daily. Amniotic fluid primarily contains vernix caseosa, fetal skin cells, hair, white blood cells, and other substances—hardly romantic at all.
Yet no one can deny amniotic fluid's vital role for the developing baby. "Its primary function is protection—both for the fetus and the mother," Chen Min explains. The fluid allows the fetus to move freely without deformation from prolonged uterine pressure, crucial for musculoskeletal development, while also cushioning against external impacts.Normal swallowing of amniotic fluid is vital for fetal gastrointestinal development. While this process involves ingesting their own urine—sometimes mixed with meconium—mothers shouldn't worry excessively. Fetal urine and meconium are relatively clean, and amniotic fluid possesses antibacterial properties.
During labor, amniotic fluid prevents fetal distress caused by intense uterine contractions. For the mother, this fluid acts as a cushion, minimizing discomfort from fetal movements. Additionally, amniotic fluid flowing out during delivery cleanses the birth canal, reducing infection risks.
