According to World Health Organization projections, infertility will become the third most prevalent disease in the 21st century, following only cancer and cardiovascular/cerebrovascular diseases. In China, one in every eight couples of childbearing age currently experiences infertility, with an incidence rate approaching 10%—and this proportion continues to rise!
Why is this happening?Three particularly "fashionable" reasons stand out: First, teenage girls who become pregnant before marriage and undergo multiple abortions, leading to infertility. Second, career women who delay childbearing due to busy schedules, only to find themselves unable to conceive after age 35. Third, the widespread misconception that advanced technology can create a myth of successful late-life childbearing.

Phenomena:
1. Ineffective contraception: Many rely on luck rather than taking contraceptive measures. Even when contraception is attempted, methods like withdrawal or rhythm calculation are common, or oral contraceptive pills are missed, often leading to failure and requiring abortion as a remedy.
2. Unplanned Pregnancy Before Marriage: A large-scale 2008 survey revealed that adolescents are reaching sexual maturity earlier, with the average age of first sexual intercourse being 19.7 years. Among the surveyed population, the average number of unintended pregnancies within a year was 1.7.
Consequently, the primary users of abortion services are typically aged 17-22, with the youngest being 15 years and 3 months old. First, most abortions use vacuum aspiration. Repeated suction and scraping of the uterus can thin the endometrium, preventing fertilized eggs from implanting and causing infertility. Even if pregnancy occurs, it is more likely to result in miscarriage.
Second, unlike general surgical procedures, abortion is performed without direct visualization. Even with visual-guided abortion, it differs from direct observation. The endometrium typically consists of a basal layer and a functional layer. Damage to the basal layer during abortion can lead to endometrial thinning, causing irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, or even intrauterine adhesions resulting in infertility.
Third, abortion procedures can also cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) infections, leading to fallopian tube blockage. It is common for women of childbearing age to experience infertility after a single abortion; upon investigation, this is often found to be related.
Typically, two weeks to a month of rest is required after an abortion or childbirth. However, some individuals resume intense work or study after just three to five days following an abortion for an unintended pregnancy. Since they are still in the "confinement period," their immunity is compromised, making them susceptible to various gynecological inflammations that can lead to infertility.
What about medical abortions? If a woman has poor ovulation function or insufficient luteal function, the medication-induced abortion may disrupt the secretion of progesterone and related substances in the body. This can easily cause endocrine disorders in women, leading to infertility.
Recommendation: Women should not undergo more than three induced abortions due to unintended pregnancies throughout their lifetime. Many Western countries have legally banned induced abortion procedures.
If an abortion is necessary, it must be performed by a qualified and experienced physician to avoid excessive curettage that could thin the endometrium, potentially causing infertility later.
Avoid sexual intercourse for one month after an abortion. Engaging in sexual activity or poor hygiene practices before the "one-month" period can easily lead to pelvic infection. If acute inflammation or heavy bleeding occurs post-procedure, seek emergency care at the nearest well-equipped hospital immediately. Do not delay treatment due to privacy concerns, as this may lead to infection and progression to chronic pelvic inflammation, potentially causing infertility.

A staggering 78.9% of childless women plan to delay until after age 29.A study in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou found that women with higher education, senior positions, and greater income were more likely to delay marriage and childbearing (marrying after age 30 and having children after age 33).

After age 30, ovarian aging makes conception difficult
1. Eggs are not "ageless"
From the perspective of the ovarian reproductive cycle, humans reach peak germ cell numbers (6-7 million) at 20 weeks of embryonic development. By birth, only 2 million remain, and by puberty, just 300,000 persist. During the reproductive years, a batch of follicles (3-10) grows each month, but only one develops into a dominant follicle under hormonal influence.
Female hormone secretion changes with age, primarily manifested by declining estrogen levels and conversely rising gonadotropins. This leads to diminished ovarian reserve, hinders follicular development, causes irregular ovulation, and may even result in anovulation.
Statistics indicate that female fertility begins declining after age 30. From ages 30 to 40, the annual pregnancy rate decreases by 5% to 10%. By age 43, eggs show signs of aging and gradually deplete. Thus, eggs are not "immortal"!
2. Increased Miscarriage Rates with Age
Statistics show that the miscarriage rate among women aged 25 to 30 is approximately 15%, while it rises to 40% for those over 40. This is because as age increases, insufficient progesterone secretion and diminished luteal function fail to maintain a favorable uterine environment. This impairs the implantation of the fertilized egg, preventing pregnancy or leading to miscarriage after conception.
One case involved a 37-year-old woman who had been unable to conceive for six years of marriage. After finally becoming pregnant, she experienced vaginal bleeding just over a month later. Her family was terrified and rushed her to the hospital. To be safe, she remained hospitalized for pregnancy preservation until delivery. Today, hospitalization for pregnancy preservation after conception has become almost mandatory for women of advanced maternal age.
Recommendation: Research by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics confirms that age 35 marks the steepest decline in fertility. We urge friends to take this fertility warning line seriously.
Assisted reproductive technology is not a panacea for infertility: Modern assisted techniques have yet to overcome premature ovarian failure and egg aging.

High-tech solutions also have age limits
When couples face infertility, doctors first explore natural conception methods tailored to the cause. If unsuccessful, they may recommend artificial insemination. Only when these options fail do they consider IVF.
