While everyone has moments of laziness, new scientific research reminds us not to let ourselves become too idle. Staying moderately busy can help dispel negative emotions.
According to a July 31 report in the UK's Daily Telegraph, Professor Christopher Hays, a behavioral scientist at the University of Chicago, recruited student volunteers. They first completed a survey questionnaire. Afterward, they had 15 minutes of free time and could choose to submit the questionnaire on the spot or walk to another collection point.
Although 68% of participants opted for the easier route and submitted their surveys nearby, the study revealed that those willing to walk a few extra steps reported significantly greater happiness than the lazy ones. Professor Haidt thus concluded that finding something to do and maintaining a sense of busyness can bring joy.
In fact, both mental engagement and physical labor can heighten one's sense of happiness. Modern people are busy for various reasons—earning a living, making money, gaining recognition, helping others... From a deeper perspective, busyness is a source of joy, while laziness makes life dull and uninteresting.
