The Commentary on Dietary Recipes records: "Chili peppers are hot in nature, pungent and bitter in taste. They warm the middle burner, dry dampness, ward off wind and cold, eliminate fishy odors, aid digestion, open blood stasis, and promote large intestine function." This means chili peppers possess warming properties that dispel internal cold and dampness, enhance blood circulation and metabolism, and stimulate appetite. Thus, they are primarily used as seasonings to stimulate the appetite.
When capsaicin "burns" in the stomach, drinking a cup of caffeinated black tea enhances the slimming effect. Chili peppers also stimulate the production of two enzymes that prevent excessive fat accumulation during fat burning.
Additionally, chili peppers cause gastric mucosal congestion and accelerate gastrointestinal motility—explaining why spicy hotpot often leads to diarrhea.Eating leads to immediate bowel movements, preventing calorie absorption—naturally, weight gain is unlikely.
While chili products abound, raw chili peppers offer the best nutritional value, followed by dried chili powder and peeled chili peppers. Pickled chilies and chili sauces, however, undergo extensive processing and often contain high sodium and calories, making them less healthy options—especially for those with hypertension.
Beginners can start by taking a small bite with lunch and dinner daily. Since chili causes significant fluid loss, pair it with acidic beverages like plum juice or lemon juice. These not only replenish fluids but also help balance the effects.
You can also incorporate chili powder into your cooking to gradually acclimate to spiciness and build tolerance. Alternatively, opt for green peppers, which are rich in vitamins and contain relatively less capsaicin. They offer a pleasant taste while helping prevent excessive stomach acid.
Two groups should exercise caution with chili consumption: asthma sufferers, who should limit intake as capsaicin may trigger flare-ups, and aspirin users, as chili inhibits aspirin absorption.
Editor's Note: Chili-based weight loss methods are not recommended for those unsuited to spicy foods.
