High heels can accentuate a woman's figure and charm, but prolonged wear may lead to certain health issues, becoming a "beauty hazard." Ms. Lin, a 32-year-old sales clerk, recently experienced persistent neck discomfort and headaches. Hospital examinations revealed these symptoms were significantly linked to her frequent high-heel use.
While cervical spondylosis is commonly associated with middle-aged and elderly individuals, statistics indicate that the onset age in China has been progressively younger in recent years. The incidence among individuals around 30 years old shows a rising trend annually. Factors such as prolonged sitting at computers, improper pillow height, excessive fatigue, poor posture, and ill-fitting shoes can all contribute to cervical spine issues.
Miao Zhongrong, Director of the Interventional Neurology Center at Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, explained to Life Times that wearing high heels shifts the body's center of gravity forward to maintain balance, causing excessive lumbar lordosis. This can lead to spinal deformation, concentrated stress on the lumbar and cervical vertebrae, and muscle tension. Long-term strain may trigger pain and exacerbate cervical and lumbar spine disorders. If left untreated for an extended period, severe cases may compress nerves, requiring treatment from a neurologist.
Traditional Chinese medicine has long advocated the principle of "treating upper ailments by addressing the lower body, and curing all diseases through the feet," underscoring the significant impact of foot health on overall well-being. Zhang Jianzhong, Director of Orthopedics at Beijing Tongren Hospital (affiliated with Capital Medical University) and Director of the Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Center, advises everyone to choose shoes that fit properly and avoid squeezing the feet—a precaution especially crucial for the elderly and those with medical conditions.Women are advised not to sacrifice health for aesthetics by wearing high heels for extended periods—avoid them whenever possible. Soaking feet in warm water before bed can alleviate muscle soreness and neck discomfort caused by high-heel wear.
Regular exercise also helps relieve tense neck muscles. The "rice character exercise" is a simple neck care method: using the top of your head or chin as the tip and your neck as the pen, repeatedly write the Chinese character for "rice" (米) 5-10 times per session. Note: Individuals with cervical spondylosis should perform this under medical supervision.
