Clinical Manifestations of Sudden Death in the Elderly
Most sudden deaths occur outside the hospital, making it difficult to determine the exact time of death or whether there were any warning signs before the event. Clinically, the cause of death is primarily inferred based on the presence or absence of a history of heart disease or evidence of it.
Clinical identification of sudden death in the elderly
Sudden loss of consciousness accompanied by the disappearance of major arterial pulses (such as the carotid and femoral arteries) is a reliable clinical sign.
(1) Sudden loss of consciousness or coma (occurring 10–20 seconds after cardiac arrest). Pale complexion with cyanosis.
(2) Absence of carotid pulse. Absence of radial pulse. Absence of heart sounds. Unmeasurable blood pressure.
(3) Intermittent, sighing-like breathing followed by cessation.
