Shoulder stiffness often leaves one restless, with arms feeling uncomfortable no matter how they're positioned. Massage can provide relief for shoulder soreness. However, stimulating specific acupoints on the shoulder is key to achieving effective relaxation.
Massage the Jianjing Point for Elderly Back and Shoulder Pain
The most commonly used acupoint for shoulder massage is Jianjing (GB21).To locate this point, the recipient typically sits upright, leans forward, or lies prone. It is situated on the shoulder, directly above the nipple, at the midpoint between the Dazhui acupoint (GV14) and the shoulder peak. This corresponds to the intersection of the line extending straight down from the nipple and the shoulder line.
Massaging the Jianjing point can directly treat or assist in alleviating shoulder stiffness, dizziness, eye strain, tinnitus, hypertension, and stiff neck.
The specific technique involves the recipient sitting upright while the practitioner stands behind them. The practitioner spreads their thumbs apart and keeps the other four fingers together, resting them naturally on the recipient's shoulders at the Jianjing points. The four fingers and thumbs then apply rhythmic, alternating pressure in a kneading motion. For elderly individuals, adding light tapping with a hollow fist on the back enhances the effect.
It is important to note that pressure applied to the shoulder well acupoint should not be excessive or prolonged. Individuals with high blood pressure or cardiovascular/cerebrovascular conditions should avoid prolonged or heavy pressure.
