Lying flat on your back exerts pressure on the vertebral arteries in the head, directly affecting blood flow to the brain. Over time, this can lead to insufficient cerebral blood supply, causing symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and unsteadiness when standing.Elderly individuals with hypertension or cervical spondylosis should especially avoid washing their hair while lying flat. For seniors, the traditional forward-leaning posture is safer. However, those with hypertension should avoid prolonged bending; an upright posture while showering is more suitable. 2. Water temperature should be appropriate The elderly have sensitive scalps to temperature changes. Water that is too cold or too hot can stimulate blood vessels, causing abnormal vasoconstriction.Seniors with diabetes, hypertension, or atherosclerosis should be especially cautious. Long-term use of cold water can overwhelm the brain's nerves, causing headaches and dizziness. Water that is too hot can damage hair and cause burns. A water temperature of around 40°C (104°F) is ideal for washing hair. This temperature effectively cleanses the scalp and hair, improves scalp blood circulation, and relieves fatigue.
3. Massage While Washing
The scalp is rich in blood vessels and contains numerous vital meridians and acupoints. Massaging the scalp during shampooing offers health benefits. After rinsing out shampoo with clean water, use the pads of all ten fingers to massage the scalp while combing. Start from the hairline at the forehead, moving backward over the crown to the nape. Continue for 10–15 minutes. Regular massage helps prevent age-related hair loss.
4. Ensure hair is completely dry before sleeping
Many seniors habitually wash their hair early in the morning before heading downstairs for exercise. Others wash their hair just before bedtime and go to sleep with damp hair. Both habits are inadvisable.Morning temperatures are lower, causing wet hair to dry slowly. The lingering dampness can lead to headaches. Sleeping with wet hair and fatigue can result in grogginess, headaches, and weakness upon waking the next day. During sleep, blood flow to the head slows, and wet hair allows heat to be drawn away by moisture.
