Recently, a cold front swept through Zhuhai. According to the Second People's Hospital of Zhuhai, there has been a surge in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction, hypertension, cerebral hemorrhage, and stroke. Below, we provide detailed guidance on the need for caution during morning exercises for the elderly.
On the evening of November 16, an 85-year-old Macau resident suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while shopping at Qianshan Wanjia Supermarket. On the morning of the 18th, a 68-year-old elderly person collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage while buying groceries... Both patients were promptly admitted for emergency treatment and are now out of life-threatening danger.According to Dr. Tang from the Emergency Department of the Second People's Hospital, approximately 200 patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are treated daily. Among emergency cases, sudden conditions like cerebral hemorrhage and myocardial infarction account for over 40% of cases—a 60% increase from last month.
"Many suffer attacks during morning exercises, with 120 ambulances transporting them directly from training sites to the hospital," Dr. Tang explained. The primary cause for these elderly patients is improper exercise—including inappropriate timing, intensity, and lack of protective measures. "Winter is a high-risk season for cardiovascular diseases. Lower outdoor temperatures increase blood viscosity, potentially triggering or exacerbating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions. The period between 6 and 11 a.m. is particularly high-risk for myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death." Beyond morning workouts, elderly individuals who habitually go out early or late are also prone to episodes during their commutes.
Doctors therefore advise seniors to exercise within their limits during morning workouts—avoiding stubbornly pushing themselves, starting too early, or overdoing it.Additionally, seniors over 60, especially those with hypertension or cardiovascular/cerebrovascular conditions, should inform family members before going out in the morning, evening, or cold weather. Avoid going alone whenever possible; it's best to go with companions and carry family contact information. That concludes our introduction to cautious morning exercise for seniors. We hope this information proves helpful. Finally, we wish you good health and smooth sailing this winter.
